Does Your Mind Stay On Guns During The Summer?

Post by Blaine »

Of course, it does. Mine, too. But, it's salmon/steelhead fishing and it's scoot riding time...It's hard to squeeze in shooting this time of year, ain't it? Tomorrow, me and a couple dozen other idiots are doing about a 600 mile round trip for a slice of pizza  Be a nice shake down for the new GoldWing.....

My interest subsides at this time of year due to the rain and/or brutal heat. I look forward to getting back outside shooting in the Fall.

Quad rideing is the big thing that I and wife like. (me moreso). Also I am getting interested in flying again. A long sad story, its been about 15 years since I flew and I JUST passed my physical. That was a hurdel! I have a old plane that has been stored forever, and is close to finished being rebuilt. We will see how that goes.

I think about old Winchesters and shooting them year round. Perhaps too much so. Of course, having 7 of them hanging on my office wall doesn't help much.

I'm not sure there is a day when I don't either think about target shooting, collecting, hunting, or (unfortunately) the political aspects of guns. If it is GOOD weather, and I'm lucky enough to have time, I'll go out and at least shoot briefly (sometimes my son and I do the "one shot, one gong, one hundred yards" drill with randomly selected guns). If the weather is BAD, swapping scopes, minor repairs, and reloading will do. At least once a week I try to do something constructive and "political" as well.

If we all sucked it up and did OUR part of the "political" stuff instead of playing too much and hoping "the NRA" would do it for us, we'd not be in this freedom-eroding, socialist, mess.

stays light longer... and I can shoot near the house. The .22's come out a couple of times a week all summer.

Fall winter and spring tend to be very windy and somedays downright cold in Central Oklahoma... so I take advantage of these long warm evenings.

Yep, do a lot of shooting during the summer -- mostly .22LR. This year I've even picked up my fishing interest and I carry a .38 S&W 2" Snubby in the bottom of my fishing tackle box along with a .22LR Derringer. The main reason I carry them in the tackle box is for a two-legged insect repellent as I fish in some pretty remote places. I also carry a shotgun and rifle in the truck and if fishing is slow, I revert to plinking targets of opportunity. I also do a lot of ground squirrel shooting.

+1. Since I was old enough to remember, there hasn't been a day go by that I didn't have guns on my mind. If I go anywhere, I plan my route by the gun or pawn shops in the area. Unfortunately, not much money to go too far anymore.

Interesting question, I can say that I run quite a few gun collector organizations / forums....
The monthly pattern of traffic to the websites, that seems a reasonable reflection of thinking about, is pretty consistent from year to year with dips and peaks on specific months....

We haven't been on this new site very long but if the admins don't care (I'm not really) I can see what stats are there....
We could tune the stats a bit it we did care, I typically don't but have dropped adsense on the bottom of a few site just to pay the host bill.

I think about guns everyday, one way or another. Beings I pack everyday for work and everywhere I go, it's hard not to think about guns. But, the summer does get in the way with other things that need done.

Ted, years ago I taught myself to fly remotes. I crashed a ton of them before I could fly one worth beans. I was making so many of them that I ended up going to the hospital because of inadvertant inhalation of cyanoacrylate (super glue). Even trying not to.

I do have several competing hobbies, but i spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about shooting and related activities. My outdoor range is approx 30 miles from my house , so i have to plan my day around that, --- and i only get to go maybe a couple times a month. The indoor range is closer, is convenient and prices are reasonable, but its a PIA to police your brass on my .45 ACP days, plus i hate it when some jack-hole thinks he needs to sight in a slug gun on a pistol range or something (i have sensitive ears and the muzzle blast from a 357 is about all i can tolerate indoors -even with muffs over plugs)

I have a lot of fun planning and researching my next "project" , perusing the net and reading gun magazines too. Modding out my off the shelf stuff to better suit my needs is a lot of fun as long as the firearm is not something i anticipate will have any real collector value in my lifetime (Short barrel Marlin 94, Shortened and accurized Model 700, -- stuff like that--- if i had an original 1886 or pre-'64 model 70, i wouldnt touch it :D ) --- makes going to the range more fun to see how my mods work out. Actually since i dont have the tools, my mods consist of dreaming up what i want the 'smith to do, dropping it off and waiting --- which sometimes makes me antsy in the pantsy, but oh well

However, my interest ebbs and flows ----------- weeks when the soil is damp and track conditions are perfect, my motocross bikes demand far more of my attention, and sometimes i just like to tinker around with one of my old trucks or aomething. Also, i have 10 acres of prairie to take care of - 15 if i count my mother's place --- so that is also an incredible time consumer in the summer -----
---- which reminds me -- its 1130- in the morning on a Saturday, i need to sign off and get on the tractor ! sigh

I've only lost two over the years. One was pilot error and flying in poor conditions. The other was a mechanical failure. I started off with an inexpensive styrofoam trainer. That poor thing took a lot of abuse and kept on going. After I could handle that, I sought instruction at the local club and bought a 72" high wing gas trainer. After I soloed at the club with that trainer, I got into the low wing sport planes and now even twins. But with the last couple I have bought the price of a new levergun or two, I'm prolly done buying any more planes. Unless I loose another one to the gremlins.

Sure does, but I do get lazy and sit in the barn with a fan on me and wait for a jack rabbit, fox, or coyote to wonder by. Then I go to the door and see if I can hit it. If I do fine if I don't fine. I just wait for another one. It gets up in the high 90s and 100s this time of year in Texas. :D

Yes too much ! Mainly I travel around all day for my job and it's always time to take a break when I pass by a gunshop. I'm at a gunshop/hardwarestore/pawnshop about 3 days out of the week. It's hard to squeeze in right now without taking away from family time. Last night I started casting bullet about 9:30 and ended at midnight. It's the only time I can . Activities with the kids come first, shooting is one of them, plus it's a hoot conoeing, camping, fishing ,etc.
