What your you doing for Memorial Weekend? Pics encouraged!

Post by mod71alaska »

Over Memorial Weekend I'm working, but it's the fun kind of work. My weekend will be taken up with (OK, mostly supervising) elbow grease varnishing and spit polishing a new (to us) boat! She's a 31' wooden lapstrake sport fisherman/weekend cruiser with twin inboards. She arrives here in Rockport, ME from OH tomorrow afternoon. Am I excited! A little nervous, too, until I see her safely offloaded from that truck. Here she is last summer before I bought her. I'll post more photos over the summer of our boating adventures on the coast of Maine.

Oh...guess where my gun money is going!!!

Image

Of course, Memorial Weekend is not just a weekend for work and the beginning of summer fun. I am raising an American flag and pausing to remember in humility and with the deepest of gratitude the many brave soldiers and patriots in our country's history who fought and died or were gravely injured so that I, and we as a nation, can live free!

What are you doing this Memorial Weekend? Pictures...especially family pictures...are encouraged!

I'll hopefully get an hour or two to sit back at the range and read a history book of some sort, and contemplate a bit what our ancestors died for.

I'll try not to get too depressed that we've thrown most of it away...

I'll be at Union-Williams Church and Cemetery in Cole Camp Mo. for the holiday. The Cemetery dates to the civil war, and the church dates to 1904 (which replaced the log church that was there). Many of my relatives are buried there. The church is open for services only on Memorial day, and then there is a pot luck dinner afterwards spread out on boards between the hitching rails under the oak trees. There is no running water, no electricity, and only a couple of out houses for modern convenience. If you don't mind the poison ivy just past the fences there's lots of gooseberrys to pick at for hors-devours.

Get up bright and early Saturday and take the mighty Fram, my year-round mountain bike, 15 miles across town to the Turnagain trailhead. Do some hiking, head back up the highway and get some shooting in at Rabbit Creek range. I'm almost finished getting the Big Bore 94 rifle/shotgun ready for hunting. Just one more sighting in and double check of my loads. Then some practice with the Speed Six, and it's back into town for a sweep through the parks and home. The weather has been stunningly beautiful up here this month, so hopefully that's how it stays. These are pics from a run I did from Alyeska in April:

Sunday I plan to make another batch of my stew:

For Memorial Day itself I'm going to read a book about December in a small Belgian village in 1944.

Gonna get my trailer set up at our place on the mountain. Tour around the Red Desert a little. Exercise my personal little shooting range quite a bit. Have some friends up for burgers. Probably take a nap.

Will be thinking about some friends and family who are no longer here to enjoy it with us.

Saturday is my youngest's birthday and college graduation.
She completed her bachelors in english last semester and
has just completed a semester towards her teaching credential.
That will take up Saturday.

Sunday will be more work on the car. Might get some time in to
work on a gun project, we'll see.

Monday is another work day for me.

Congrats mod71!

She sure is a good looker!!!

Ya know the best part of having a wooden boat???

You get a MUCH LONGER boating season!!!

Yes!

That's right...

...you get a...

...much longer boating season!

Of course, that's because it takes an extra 3 weeks to get her ready and an extra 2 to put her away!!! :D

( Ask me how I know... )

I hope to get out on my much smaller (but fiberglass) boat.

I was thinking about what all the dead guys and gals from generations past would want me to do....

I could attend a ceremony and hear some speeches, and gab with like-minded patriotic individuals, which would make me feel good, but likely accomplish little constructive change (...and it's all about 'change' now, isn't it...?)

I could attend a family picnic, and get some good steak and brews, and catch up on family events - maybe do some back-yard plinking...

- or -

I could do something far less enjoyable,

far more work,

and really not much fun at all...

but actually GOOD for the nation.

Something which would actually preserve what they DIED for.

Something like...

I think I will Write some letters to politicians, journalists, and others:

- about the "treaty" stuff
- about "indefinite detention" stuff
- about "socialized health" care stuff
- about the "war on drugs" stuff

They DIED for the cause of preserving freedom, and I think we owe more to them than just a flag ceremony, family barbeque, or watching some parade on television.

If we're not politically active, we're allowing the nation to go down the toilet, and we're as big a part of the problem as the politicians fighting over who gets to push the flush lever.

Our plans have changed somewhat. With all the rain we've been having, if it rains again tomorrow our range trip will have to be postponed. And we barely had time to BBQ sausages between bouts of rain today. It's not raining here at the moment, but it's thundering pretty good. It should start to come down any time now. All week it has been raining every day. There's a feller near me what's buildin' hisself a Ark.

I am working out of my home this weekend. Nothing glamorous. It's that business has just started to turn around lately and I really should take advantage of it. It's been a long year or so.
It will be back to the regular day job on Tuesday.

There is a CABO holster on its way that will fit my N frames. I am kind of anxious to see how it will work out. Maybe later on this week.

Shoot safe,

Work at the house because tomorrow I'm off to a business conference in Las Vegas all next week. I've got to load up the 44 for Linebaugh's visit to TX in a few weeks.

I did spend all day Saturday with the Austin TX Second Amendment Sisters (yes I am a card carrying "sister"). We have classes geared toward women that are intrested in learning about guns, but have never gotten any closer than a television set to one.

We provide eyes & ears, guns, ammo, safety class, and coaching, for a nominal cost. Basically all the ladies have to do is show up.

I am surprised that most of the women we've had over the years are middle aged and up. Its not really "teaching the next generation" but if we get momma on board, the daughters will follow. Women are waking up to this, and its a good thing. It has always amazed me that the NOW group has been so anti-gun. great equillzer that it is.

Spent all the time I could with #2 son. Gave him some shootin' books to read in his spare time. Answered some Bible questions that he had. Bought him a fine meal at Olive Garden. Gave him some cash for incidentals.

He leaves for boot camp with the U.S. Army tomorrow morning. I hope to see him again in December. I am proud of him, but it is bitter sweet.

I ended up going to my mother's to do a little painting / maintenance for her.
She told me she's going to start collecting.

She bought this '77 on Thursday and just told me about today.
Image

To go with her '82 that she bought last year.
Image
The '82 had a new engine installed just before she bought it. It had a couple
issues but have since been worked out.

She went to look at another today but had sold an hour before she got there.

Go Mom! Now if I could just get her to invest in some Winchesters!!

We went downtown to Boalsburg, which claims to be the first city to start "Memorial Day." Unique was the arrival of the guns of the USS Pennsylvania which were brought to the PA military museum. They were discovered in a Naval Yard. They are 14" and are dated about 1916 or so. The USS Pennsylvania was at Pearl Harbor but sustained only minor damage...ship next to it was sunk. This is my middle boy Alexander between the guns:

Image
Image
Image

They had Civil War Artillery reenactment but due to my oldest with Autism(he cannot take the thought of being close to those cannons when they are going off) I did not get any photos.

Here is a link for the USS Pennsylvania. She was the "Sister ship" to the Arizona, and was among the first to return fire on the Japanese at Pearl Harbor, and went on to alot more action after repairs.

He leaves for boot camp with the U.S. Army tomorrow morning. I hope to see him again in December. I am proud of him, but it is bitter sweet.
