I found this neat photo of Grandpa teaching me to drive the tractor. Has Dad's Plymouth in the background... Where? Parslow Road, Fly Creek, NY 1957 (I think...)

I love Photo's like that. They remind me of the love that we all knew growing up as kids, the laughter in the streets, the feeling of a home rather than a house. The smell of coffee and Prince Albert in the morning. Ice tea under the shade tree in the afternoons. Grandma's coconut cream pie, and grandpa's laughter. Here's one of my own from that time. I'm in the middle. Dad still has the 520, and I still love to cut hay with it and a JD sickle mower.

Two cool photos... I was never lucky enough to know either of my granddads... and the farm I remember most was my Uncle Roy's... but he never owned a tractor, farmed with horses right up till he retired in '85 at about age 85. I have his sickle bar mower, hay rake, plow and tack. Visits every other summer are among my favorite memories growin' up. Alas, he gave me his '46 Ford p/u... and I let one of my cousins talk me out of it... tried to get a swap for his 1960 Sunliner... that one I woulda kept.

Great pics guys! When I was growing up Dad used a ford 8N with a Dearborn sickle mower to cut all the hay for the cattle and I spent many hours perched beside the seat spotting groundhogs in the hay field. Once I had one spotted Dad would pop it with an old Stevens .22 single shot he kept on the tractor. Once the hay was cut and rowed up Grand dad would bring his John Deere and New Holland baler and get 'em baled up.
I learned to drive on those 2 tractors and the old '48 ford flat bed that we hauled the hay to the barn on. When I was little I thought haying time was big fun,when I got old enough to start actually doing some work I found out that I wasn't as crazy about it.
Even with all the work involved I wish I could have one more day out there with the two of them.

And also a little further from you the Berryville Steam and Gas Show . This one is usually the weekend following the Bridgewater show !

I used to carry a 1914 Frick Steam Traction Engine to them both about 25 years ago !

didnt have to spend almost no money,just have fun.(and work some)
There wasnt all this media stuff on how bad the world is getting ect.

Those were the best of times! Little kids played in the hay barn (the small square bales) and a waaaay on up there, too! Learned to climb, build, tunnel, and work (to put it back!).

Cool pics, reminds me of sitting my granddad's lap steering his old John Deer. Those are some of my best memories. What I would give to have some photos like that.

Good photo, Hobie. Looks like either a ferguson TO-20 or TO-30. Good tractors. I had a very nice original TO-30 some years back that belonged to a soldier who never returned in 1970. It ended up near mescalero's neck of the woods to be used as an orchard tractor.

But I was more of the "Pull the throttle on the steam engine" type


But a big old 30-60 Aultman Taylor or Rumley Oil Pull were great as well !

Thanks for sharing Hobie. The good ol' days were much better than these days. Didn't help that I grew up. Now I'm depressed.

Great picture. Unfortunately , today that would be called child endangerment and your life would have be supervised by some DMV butted social worker who's answer to all life's questions is another donut.

I wish I had pictures of me learning to drive Bedford flatbed farm trucks in New Zealand at age ten. Great memories.

Don't mess with success! I tried in the early 1970s (before going into service) the long hair thing. Much happier without the mane.

A friend of mine has a couple old John Deeres. Last fall he let me plow with his 50. Here's a photo ...



I really enjoy old John Deeres. Next Sunday, there is a special service at a country church about 15 miles away for drivers of old tractors. I'll be driving the John Deere 50 and my friend is driving another of his old classic tractors. We'll head down there for the service and then, afterward, everyone heads outside to admire each others' tractors. The women will come by car. Should be fun.
