Primer message from Sinclair Intl.

Sinclair put this up, amongst other articles, on their new website. Kind of what everyone has suspected ...

This from the Sinclair Letter:
Individuals are buying and keeping more primers in their own personal inventories and this has prevented some reloaders from having any primers at all.
No kidding. Reloaders should have seen this coming at least a year ago (I think two years ago personally) and certainly after the November 2008 elections while primers were still available through December/January. If a reloader doesn't have primers on hand now, he/she has no one to blame but themselves.

Ed is right.

I'd like to point out one other thing. The inside scoop on Federal has consistently been incorrect. We read this but Federal has moved a lot of primers to major retailers this past week. I have 5K of the LP primers in the truck at this moment that were delivered today. One of the rumors (supposedly backed up with an impeachable source) was that Federal was buying back already sold primers to meet ammo production requirements. Why they would do that and then deliver all types of primers is beyond logic and I doubt that it happened.

I think that you can believe what you can see for yourself and nothing else. IOW, there appears to be some deliberate misinformation out there.
Sincerely,

Hobie

I find it amusing that those who did not pay attention to the political trends a couple years ago, and did not stock up, are the ones most using the phrase "hoarders". They are p.o.'d at us because we stocked up and they didn't. Since they did not do as we suggested, now they've been caught with their pants down.
I bounce around four shooting forums on a regular basis and it's the same on all of them. Those who were aware and stocked up as they could are being denigrated by those who didn't. They are now resulting in name calling.

The only folks I have any sympathy for, are those new to the sport who prior to getting into it didn't realize what effect politics has on the shooting industry. The rest, I have no sympathy for at all.

Many many summers ago I shot IPSC. I shot both revolver ( .357 Mag ) and auto ( 45 ACP ) and snubby ( 38 Spcl ) and burned up mucho rounds in the process. Anybody who has shot any form of competition knows how much ammo you'll burn through in a short period of time.

One time I shot and loaded so much I just ran short of primers. I didn't have enough time to buy any before the next match and ended up digging out anything I could find from my junk ammo box, and then borrowing some from a friend at the match. Boy was I mad at myself.
I made a decision right there to keep a supply of primers and powder in reserve equal to at least 3 months of my shooting. It took me a while to build up that reserve and I kept it going until about 20 years ago. There was a 5 year period where I didn't fire a round, then for the next 10 years I shot up much of my reserves. So now I'm in IL and unable to shoot as I used to, guess what? I'm building my reserves back up. Yep, for the last 5 years I've been picking up primers and powder and bullets as the budget allows.

I'm not to my goal of 10K of each type of primer quite yet, but I'm close. Nother words, I ain't hurting. With my ammo reserves pretty decent, and my other supplies, I'm sitting good. I haven't even been to a gun show or gun store since just after the new year, nor have I bought any powder or primers on line. But I'm not panicking.

For those who did not pay attention and see this coming, so sorry, better luck next time.

Feed the kids , hoard primers. Not a tough decision for me. I don't have a monthly primer budget and don't see one any time soon. I don't shoot competition. But I do have a years supply of primers for my shooting needs. If I get down to the last brick of primers I go buy another brick . I might buy two bricks in the future instead of one. But I will never be in the position to buy 25 bricks at once.

If you use the primers go buy them. If you have a 10 years supply that would be hoarding. But I'm O.K. with that. But it is what it is Hoarding.

In case anyone needs large pistol primers, my peddler has CCI 350 primers on the shelf. I'm thinking $39/1000 + shipping. He also has the pre loaded large pistol primers for the same price. Let me know quick and I can get them out to you.

M 1,

If you got too much it just means you ain't shooting enough. So, get out and burn some powder.

Or ..... send it to me :D

BenT just proved J Miller's point.

If one doesn't have the money, that's the way it is. Or if one is just starting out. But if not either of those and you didn't stock up, well too bad, so sad.

If the reason is you don't have the money then the problem wouldn't be solved by primers being avalable. I can't afford 25 bricks of primers at once either. I started my stash by buying two packs when I opened one, I think that that put my cost at $1.50 instead of $.75. Same with powder I buy two when I open one. Soon it got to where I could put the cash back and buy it by the brick and by the jug. You don't have to buy 25 bricks at one just buy more than you are using at the moment.

I learned in '94 about primer availability or lack there of. I too saw this coming and bought ammo, powder, primers, cases and bullets starting back in '07.

I get paid every 2 weeks. Every 2 weeks I bought something of the above. Back in January I got a decent bonus check. I picked up 10k primers, 5k of SP and a mix of the rest. Boy am I glad I did. Now you can't find ammo, primers and some powders. No Unique. Very little 2400. W231 and 296, some. No IMR-3031.

So now I'm selling 9mm to friends for current WM prices. IF WM had any...

I've also started 2 of them reloading with me. We're all learning together since I'm really new at doing it myself.

Back a year ago or so, I posted a question along the lines of "If you had to get by with just two or three powders, which ones..." because it was obvious these things were going to happen. Like some of the others said, I just bought a bit here and there, never emptying the shelves anywhere.

I've also given away a fair amount that I'd "hoarded" to a few new shooters who didn't have any idea about all this stuff until they bought their first gun a month ago. So, I feel no guilt.

Even 'price gouging' when looked at objectively is a means where a free-market system attains equilibrium of price and supply, even though it causes temporary pain for some. Forced price-ceilings are like minimum-wage - they sound good but when you apply them in the real-world, the effect is opposite of the intent.

So - in general, those with foresight, even without a slew of cash on hand to buy bunches at once, have primers. Those who don't, don't. Part of the reason many of us 'stocked up' was because we have friends who we thought might need some supplies, or newbies to get started. Same reason many of us have full pantries - we're the ones who can take food to the needy or donate it through our church.

I like the comment about the ants not causing winter, but the grasshoppers thinking so.

I still think that us of that have them, as opposed to those that do not: was just a simple question of logic, IE
do we prepare?
life will continue as always.
Chance favors the prepared.

I got a brother in Mississippi. They are having a hard time finding reloading items down there. He ain't set too bad and figues to ride it out and wait for the price to come down. I don't talk about my supplies but I won't be running out tomorrow.
