One more down

Post by Leverdude »

I finnished a Marlin 1889 I'v been fooling with for a few years yesterday. Its a 44/40. I had it lined & fit a stock to it & left it like that.
Then I noticed the stock I fit to it was inletted crooked. It was a precision gunworks second, I bought a bunch & most had obvious defects, this one wasn't so obvious. It was off by 3/4" or so & once I noticed it I couldn't sleep anymore. So I fit another one to it & replaced the forend which wasn't right anyway.
After I fitted it I polished the metal a bit & Oxpho blued the whole thing. Then I steel wooled it until I thought it was done. I might go over the barrel once more but I dont think so. To my eyes it looks like a 115 year old gun should.

Next in line is a 1889 38/40. Probably be awhile before I get it done but I took it apart & found half a case stuck in the chamber and a bulged barrel. It's getting lined in any event but I may use another barrel.
You can see the case in the second picture but might not make out the bulge, I can see it but I know its there too.

Very nice. I like the smoothed around the edges look. It would feel like a great companion carrying it through the woods.
