Lotta funnies on that site. I like the "Lawnmower DUI".

Re: OT - Tire Lost It's Bead?
I really am puzzled why that link works on another site, but not this one......Anyway, the tire was flopping around on the wheel, haveing lost the bead, and they sprayed the wheel, inside, down with WD40, lit it and the tire POOFED up and inflated.

I don't know either, here's the direct link again, just in case:
http://www.fridaypage.com/images/friday ... 9_wd40.wmv
If that doesn't work, go to:
http://www.fridaypage.com/
And then scroll down to 02.27.09 where it says "Unique WD40 use"...

I'd heard of using ether/starting fluid, but never had heard of using WD40 like that before.

My Grandpa used to do the same thing with an acetylene torch to set the beads on tractor tires. It's an "Old Farmer Trick'

Hey all - WD40 works as a starting fluid for diesels in a pinch. Never tried it on a gas engine yet (never needed to). Watch yer top knots. Wind

Re: OT - Tire Lost It's Bead?
Tires will normally stay on the bead even when flat. Unless like in this case the tires were being run under inflated for flotation over sand or what ever. That will cause them to roll off the bead if they are run too low.
Most wheels made now have what is called a safety bead. That is a raised area just inside the outer edge of the rim. This creates a channel for the tires bead to seat. It's supposed to keep the tire seated on the rim in case of flats and such.
When he ignited the WD-40 that created enough pressure to reseat the tire on the bead. Even after it cooled down it should have stayed there.
I watched that video twice and it looked to me like when the second guy did something to the tire it deflated as he stood up. At least that's what I think I saw.

I've done that with starting fluid on big tires. Never tried it with WD.

It must have been an old can of wd-40 as you can't do that with the new stuff. They must have changed the propellant. IIRC it used to use propane as a propellant.
As far as using it as starting fluid, don't bother, it doesn't work anymore. As far a that goes, starting fluid sometimes isn't, anymore, either. Look at the ingredients, make sure you're getting some ether in that can(15%+) or you're wasting your time in cold weather. Tried to seat a bead on a heavy stackmover tire in cold weather a couple years ago using start fluid and the stuff wouldn't even burn.

WD-40 to reseat a tire is old news in the 4x4 off road community. I saw it used for the 1st time about 30 years ago.

Re: OT - Tire Lost It's Bead?
I think it also bears mentioning that it only seats the bead. The tire will still have to be inflated but now you can use some to inflate it that doesn't give a blast of air like a air line at a tire shop would. Even a hand pump will inflate it now.
