What is the barrel twist of 1895 Win. in .405 Win.?

Post by Pathfinder09 »

Okay guys here is the delema. I've got a USRAC Winchester 1895 in .405 Win., 24" barrel. Does anyone know what the twist on the barrel is for a .405 Win 1895 Winchester?

I usually shoot 300 gr. Hornady or Barnes jacketed ammo , even with my handloads. I recently picked up some Hunter Supply Cast bullets from Midway, 315 gr., .406 dia. for .405 Win. I loaded it up with 50 grains of Reloader 7, a standard load for other 300 grain bullets. The results were terrible. not only did the accuracy suck big time, I coupld hardly hit paper at 50 yds from a bench. Upon inspection I found many of the bullets tumbled. no aerodynamics at all. I know that many times when a bullet tumbles the barrel twist could be wrong for the bullet.

I have never has this problem with any other bullet in this gun and the accuracy has always been great. Whats the problem?
Obviously it's the bullet, but what is the probably cause, and what could be the cure?

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Rifles currently on the Winchester website are listed as 1 in 10" and 1 in 14".

As far as I know, they never were 10" twist (I think some nitwit engineer wrote that in the catalog) BUT the very first ones (the converted 270s) "might" have been. All the rest that came with Japanese barrels are 14'. Your problem is not twist, it is the bullet. My 405 (second to last model, pseudo case colors but NOT a take down) slugs .4131". If the bullet , you are working with is 411 or 412, you may be whizzing into the wind. Mine will work with a 413 but prefers a 414.

You are using .406 bullets in a .411 diameter bore. They won't hit the side of the proverbial barn. You need .412 minimum.
