I have a 336 texan on the way that will be sent to JES Reboring to become a 38/55. I intend to have it bores to the smaller .375 bore so I can make use of the more popular/available jacketed bullets. My question is just how "large" of a cast bullet can I safely use? Who makes a low cost plinker and what cast hunting bullets would you recomend for the hunting of white tail deer? I am really looking forward to this project and anticipate a fun gun. Anyone here have experience with a JES Rebore and want to share? Thanks,
Goat

Re: what cast bullet for 38/55?
I just had a model 94 Win in 32 special rebored to 38-55 with a .379 bore. I was hoping to use a 377, 265 grain long flat nose from LBT that I had made for my Ruger #3 in 375 Win. It would not run thru the action and would not chamber. I had to go back to the old stand-by Lyman 375248, and it works perfectly. Not only do you have to be aware of the length of the throat, but also if it will function. I tried both the 2.125 brass and the shorter brass and sized it down to 378 with no luck.

Re: what cast bullet for 38/55?
We load for six different rifles 2new 94s, an 1885, 2rebored 94s and an 1896 model 94. The 1885 and the rebores are .375 and .376, the others are the larger bore. We have a mold from Veral Smith and size all of them to .379, this and factory are the only accurate loads in the new 94s. Hope this helps? Abilene
P.S. We put a cannelure above the top grease groove where the ogive starts, even chambers in the 1885.

I have used bullets as large as .379" One simply adjusts the load. As to the molds, the best seem to be the Lyman 375248 a PB and Lyman 375296 a GC design. These work very well in my gun.

Beartooth Bullets makes great cast bullets with gas checks. Illinois Bullets, you can find them on Reloader Auction, makes nice 255 grain plain base bullets of a softer alloy. Illinois also makes a gas check design. Both of these casters can size to meet your need. I have bullets for my 38-55, also rebored by Jesse, from both these casters and am pleased with their products.
