What if ALL your guns had to be from ONE manufacturer?

Post by AJMD429 »

I don't know why we play these "what-if" games, but I thought of another one...!

Much as I love my Marlins - they don't make much in the way of handguns; nor did Winchester, Henry, etc.

"Browning" (depending on the definition being the man or the company) made just about everything, but...

I'd pick Ruger, since their handguns are strong, reliable, and even pretty, with models suitable for CCW, plinking, and hunting. Their long guns only include the one series of Savage-99-like levers, but do offer lots in bolt, semi, and falling block actions. Their shotguns aren't what I'd pick for close-quarters home defense, but if my wife had a Mini-14 pointed at the bad guy I'll bet he'd not laugh at a Ruger Red Label if I had one!

Colt sure runs the gamut, too...

Todays manufacturers? Not to even be given a second thought---Ruger.

Yesteryears? For me, thats impossible because Winchester never made single actions and Colt never made leverguns. (I know--prototype Winchester single actions and the Colt Burgess) Also, other than their twist barrel shotguns, Colt leaves a lot to be desired in that field also.

Boy, I hope no one tells Terry about this thread :o ------------------Sixgun

How about Colt - SA Army, 1911, Lightning pump rifle, AR-15...?

I like the answer above, "Uberti" - they make about everything, I think...!

And how do you define a "Browning" - if you go by inventor, then old John Moses Browning made almost everything you'd need at one time or another.

Still, looks like Ruger is winning.

Winchester for me, but ones that were cataloged in the 1950s. Guess I would be out of luck for handguns. If they had to be modern day to have long guns and handguns, Joe is right. Uberti! Marlin would be only other choice to cover everything.

Ruger, especially now that they will have a good pocket revolver with the LCR, after the recalls are done of course!

They don't make a lever gun that I really like but if this rule came to pass I'm sure that would change.

Hey, Rossi makes handguns AND leverguns...

I think I would most miss not having any Marlins, so I would have to do without the handguns (as I currently do anyway).

US: Ruger (Solid, decent Sidearms, Bolt Guns, Rimfires and a few Levers)
Bi-Racial: SiG (makes a nice AR now, as well as a mag-fed bolt .308)
Import: Rossi/Uberti (win rifle/Colt Revolver clones)

Maybe Pedersoli...

Might be convinced to choose Charles Daley if he's considered a "manufacturer" though...

I'll throw another one in for Ruger, easy pick -- great variety. Although i could probably live the rest of my days with a Winchester Model 50 Auto shotgun, a model 94 30-30 and a 9422 -- it would not be as much fun. The only MArlin scattergun choices are those weird bolt action jobs they made decades ago. Browning comes close, but the lack of a single action pistol tears it

I could do nicely with

1) Blackhawk .45 LC, 7.5" barrel
2) Vaquero .45 LC, 3.5" bbl, bird's head grip (for CCW)
3) .44 mag lever gun
4) Mini 14 (for social situations and varmint shooting)
5) 10/22 target model and a 10/22 plinker
6) Ruger No. 1 in 45/70
7) any number of Model 77's for hunting purposes, but if i were to choose one only
it would be a synthetic model in .300 Wby mag with a big muzzle brake
8) 2 of their Red Label O/U scatterguns in 12 and 20 gauge would be nice to have as well

I'd pick Marlin, and then I'd start looking for more old Marlin pistols when I wanted a handgun! I rarely purchase handguns anyway, so wouldn't bother me much to have to stick to mainly rifles.

I will burn at the stake for apostacy here.. but ya asked and I am brave....

Remington... I still shotgun a lot... the 870 and 11-87 I dont think I could do without.

They built a pretty nice SA back in the day... I could live with one in 44-40 I have a warm spot for the Army- framed BP too.

Not a lever... but I could make due with a nice Remington Pump rifle in 32-20 and a 700 bolt gun in 30-06.

JM Browning seems to have sold some ideas to Remington... they used to make a little .22 that looks a lot like those sweet little Browning Auto loaders that loaded through the butt stock and ejected out the bottom.

Well, even HERE with our wonderful utopian violence free society [pardon the sarcasm dripping down the screen] the guns the government allows us to purchase should we fulfill the prerequisites, have the cash and catch the colonel on a good day are from different manufacturers. All revolvers I've seen for sale in the past several years are Llama. We've had quite a few CZ and Walther handguns. Rifles? I've HEARD of the Walther 22 but never seen one, they had CZ's for a while and it's been decades since they offered a centerfire to the general public. Shotguns? Mossberg or Hatsan or a Baikal in a singleshot. So even though the right to keep and bear arms is not considered a right but a privilege here, at least we've a variety to choose from depending on the need/application.

As for one manufacturer? Ruger would come the closest. They have about anything except a repeating shotgun. Marlin doesn't do handguns. Nor does Winchester. Remington only did the pifles, not true handguns. Henry doesn't do shotguns or handguns. Etc, etc, etc. Ruger's our only true "from mice to elephants" manufacturer at this time. Uberti does a lot of stuff, but it's all replicas of 19th century designs. Not much wrong with that except that their handguns can't handle the high pressure loads used in Rugers for the large and dangerous end of the spectrum.

Uberti would be my first choice, given their current line-up.

Pedersoli could keep me happy.

I wouldn't cry if Ruger was the only one. The SP-101 and No.1 handle most of my needs, but bringing back the 99/44 would help, especially if they tidied up the receiver.

Ruger. If they would make a levergun in .30-30 that was as reliable as when Bill Ruger was still running it, then I would buy it. Why they ignore the .30-30 is anybody's guess.

Because its on the verge of being a "dead" cartridge from a commercial perspective. Hornady has created a little bit of renewed interest, but the main thing keeping it afloat is the millions of 30/30's still in service by people who "dont know any better" --- not anything new being sold (except to people who read this forum maybe) Just stroll through whatever sporting goods emporium is closest and you might see 1 or 2 token centerfire leverguns - unless it is a specialty place. But rows and rows of bolt guns are to had. Even semi autos outnumber lever guns where i shop

Lot of good choices but if I had to pick one. How about my pick Thompson Center

Black Powder traditional and inlines, Rifles though single shot you can get a lot of cals plus wildcatting their custom shop provides that service in many cals TC comes easier than most. Their semi auto .22s and bolts guns in many cals.
Shotguns covered nicely, I'd pick a 28 gauge.

They don't have much of a lever but most have hammers.
Take care and have fun. Swany
