Can anyone suggest some good reading on the history of Buffalo hunting.

There's a book called "The Buffalo Book" by David A. Dary that's not so much about the hunting (although it is covered), but more of a history of people's dealings with bison in the New World. Very interesting and informative.

I just bought one from Amazon for my best friends little boy(first grade). I can not critique the book because I have not read it yet. I will be reading it with the boy. We always talk about Buffalo Hunting(I have never done it), but neither one of us know anything about it. But we still have a lot of fun talking about it. I also bought him a set of shooting sticks from Buffalo Arms. I will be calling them his "Buffalo Sticks". Tom.

Some have doubts about the accuracy of Frank Mayer's book.
A similar thread was once posted on the Shiloh board:
" 'The Buffalo Harvest' was published a few years after Mayer’s passing. It was written by Charles B. Roth, the same guy who published 'Hidalgo.' That story has been carefully researched - and ripped to shreds - by historians. It turns out that the legendary horseman, Frank Hopkins, was in reality a ditch digger in Philadelphia! It’s very possible that Roth had a knack for enhancing stories. We know for sure that Frank Mayer was a real person who lived in the right time and place. Without a doubt Frank Mayer was every bit the ‘rifle crank’ he’s made out to be. There is no reason to doubt he was a crack shot and that he worked as a market hunter."

I subsequently did a bit of research on Charles B. Roth, & it seemed that he was known to fictionalize, enhance, etc., what he wrote/spoke of.
Right now, there is a work-in-progress, The Encyclopedia of Buffalo Hunters and Skinners (hunter & skinner are alphabetized) that details much of the era. It will be interesting if any of Mayer's peers mention him or when he is discussed....

The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Re: OT-History of "Buffalo hunting" books?
Try "Getting a Stand" by Miles Gilbert. It's a collection of previously unpublished journals and records of the buffalo hunting era. Miles Gilbert is also one of the co-authors of the "Encyclopedia of Buffalo Hunters & Skinners". I believe 2 volumes are out at this point. Dixie gun Works has all these I believe. If not, send me a PM.

This may not be exactly what your looking for but I found it interesting. “Baronets and Buffalo : The British Sportsman in the American West 1833-1881” By John I. Merritt. I thought enough of it to buy it for future reference after reading it from the library if that tells you anything.

I have read this one - fairly good and enjoyable to hear about the whole situation in their own words. I would reccomenend it for winter time reading
"Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid" - Han Solo, Star Wars...
Re: OT-History of "Buffalo hunting" books?
I have a book called "The Buffalo Hunters" by Charles M. Robinson III

Re: OT-History of "Buffalo hunting" books?
Probably the best book covering the whole history of Buuffalo hunting was E. Douglas' The Hunting of The Bufffalo. Forward by Dobie, this covers everything from the early Americans to the end of the era. The most interesting thing I ever read about the buffalo was by Hornady, and he claimed that HUNTERS didn't kill the buffalo, that they got tick fever! I wish i had saved that article as it covered known kills and reproduction figures. It was a pretty presuasive case on disease being a major factor in buffalo decline.
