Puzzle 4 Redo- Now It's a Trapper!

Post by 20cows »

Ya'll remember Puzzle 4?
Image

I never was happy with the barrel. The sights weren't quite square when it was as tight as it ought to be (too loose is harder to fix than too tight).

I had another barrel that I planned for Puzzle 5, but, it was a pre-64 stamped 30 WCF. I really wanted to use that barrel with the pre-64 reciever on P5. I came across a 16" barrel from Numrich, but it has a thicker taper and would necessitate several adjustments.

Then a friend who was ill when a gunsmith called and said he had completed rebarreling, reboring (made a .32-40 out of a .32 Win Spec.) job he'd been working on for about three years. (Lots of patience paid off, I'll do a write up on the results later). The friend asked me to get the gun for him and I did so.

When I got the gun, the original barrel was with it, wrapped in newspaper. It was a post-64 top-eject trapper barrel in .30-30. Hmmm.

I delivered the gun to my friend and picked up another 94 he wanted me to restock with a SRC style stock. I mentioned the barrel might solve the problems on my nephew's carbine and he said, "Take it!" :D :D :D

Puzzle 4 is reborn!

I put a bolt mounted receiver sight, so nothing hangs off the side.

The lad said he wanted a saddle ring-

I like a lot of the older style details, like the slotted mag tube plug.

I know some of you are probably not wild about the finish on some of the parts, but this is one of the early scintered receivers that won't take a blue well and he said he kind of like the look of "character", so I put a brown patina on most of the parts that needed refinishing. It's a bastard of parts, so I guess it's fitting.

Now, that's my kinda' lever. Especially with the long nose forearm. Excellent job.:D

I've done the same thing to two of my levers so far, a Win94 30-30 and a Henry 22lr.

You should do an article on all the puzzles... I love it!

Just like my kids . They finish a jigsaw puzzle , take it apart and put back together again. Good to see your still doing puzzles.

Those "puzzles" are too cool! Where do you get all the receivers? I got me a "puzzle of me own to do. :D

Yes, cool - I like em. I've just done my one "puzzle" but it was just one gun with new front end kit and new buttstock/plate.

I enjoyed doing it though!

Interesting take on the scintered receiver finish - I wonder if repeated rust/carding would provide a more even finish? Looks good to me though! Mine is just the original finish with worn spots.

The only other "acceptable" finishes that I know of for these receivers is plating or CCH.

The receivers are the hardest to come by, for me it has always been just lucking into one

I agree with Hobie I would really like to see you do an article with pictures on all of your puzzle rifles.I feel sure there is room in the Articles section on this forum.

VERY nice!!! Thanks for sharing it with us!!

I also would very much like to see an article detailing the building of your "Puzzles." Especially interested in any
special considerations you may have encountered in getting parts from different production eras to work together,
any problem-solving you did that might be helpful to others starting their own projects, etc. I think that would be
a really great article!!

Thanks, and I always enjoy hearing about your projects!

I enjoy your puzzles too. An article on two or four would be an encouraging source for those like me who feel it would be too hard to undertake such endeavor. Your results give the vision. An article could give me the means through your experience, the intentionality would be left to me. Awesome job :D

V - Vision
I - Intentionality
M - Means
