If you have an out of round hole all a pin gage will tell you is the size of the out of round at the minimalist point.
You need at least two pont measurement.
Dang Mescaline, I think it's fair to assume the hole is round. Your splitting hairs and I hope they are not pubic. :D -----6

Steve,
Mope, As soon as I walked in the door, there were 4 other guys there that I knew and we started BS'en. Next thing I know, it was closing time at 5. :D My buds asked me what the "special tool in the case" was and instead of taking 15 minutes to explain how revolvers work, I told them "nothing".--------------6

SSSSHHHHHHHH!
Six, you've discovered the "secret" also. The 38-40 is the dimensionally most consistent of all the old cartridges. That is why its my favorite. From gun to gun, brand to brand, it is very easy to get to work.

The 44's are another matter all together, and in my limited experience, much more finicky. But I will say that this seems to be more so with old guns. Im kinda surprised at that Colt though. You'd think something they made experimentally to test would be close to nominal dimensions so they could get some baseline data.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

I have a circa 1890's year Colt SAA that the groove diameter is .408" and the cylinder throats are .400". Yes you read it correctly :)
