I don't drink more than 2 or three beers per month. But, I do prefer ice cold Corona. Raised down here on the Border, they had to put a nipple on the first bottle I drank.

I also like Shiner Bock with a good meal.

Maybe this is just a Texas thing.

I will second that. Whether it's Texas or not, I think there is some pride that goes into drinking something that is made in your home state/region. Texas has some good breweries, and the little brewery in Shiner is pretty dang good. I have yet to tour the place, but will someday. I seldom drink anymore, and rarely more than 2 or 3, but I'm with you, Charles.

I have observed over the years that Bud, is the choice of iner-city dwellers and the ignorant. Or citizens of places that real beer is not sold.

The list of the top 10 beers in the US are all on the top 10 because they're the cheapest. Natural Light? I'd rather pee in a can and drink it. That's all the high school and college kids keeping their numbers up. The only beer on that list I will drink on a regular basis is Corona. American national beers are, for the most part, watery and disgusting. They use rice as one of the main grains for the malt because it's cheaper than other grains.

[quote="BlaineG"]I'm not real picky, but lately, an IPA is really tasting good (but, I probably don't have more than a half dozen drinks a month, if that many)

Trader IPA from Uinta Brewing in Utah is a great IPA. Diamond Bear from Arkansas is the most (too much for me) bitter IPA I've ever had.

That one must've been before my time  I like Lonestar on occasion. Not because it's particularly good, but because it's not particularly bad, lol. It's decent for a cheap American style beer. I like it better than Bud, Coors, Miller, etc., and it's from Texas. Another one of those pride things.

Most of the younger members of my fiancee's family in the PI like Red Horse . But that stuff put me in mind of Colt 45 or Old English 800 .

Drank a fair amount of San Mig Lite when eating pizza over there !

Also the San Miguel Gin is pretty good mixed with mango juice

I've arrived at this way of thinking myself. The Mrs. and I had come to the conclusion that we were too unsophisticated and set in our ways to appreciate anything but lagers, so we focused on trying imported and harder-to-find domestic pilsners and helles. The result is that we will spring for Weihanstephaner Premium Verum, Radeburger Pilsner, Konig-Pilsener, Czechvar or a Spaten Premium and consider it money well spent.

(I prefer Jever, but its level of dryness and hop bitterness is too much for some acquaintances... maybe my smidgen of Frisian ancestry makes the difference.)

Domestically, there are a lot of brands that we think are light years ahead of the mass-marketed stuff. There is a local selection of beers ("Potosi") brewed up the road in conjunction with the National Brewery Museum, and while I don't indulge in the more unusual styles, their golden ale and pilsener offerings are nice ways to introduce people to the smaller, specialty beers... especially those in the family who need gentle weaning away from their stadium standbys.

I'm with deafrn on this one too. All beers he named (and many more like Augustiner, Lowenbrau, DAB, Jever and Hacker-Pschorr) are outstanding. Unless you drink LOTS of beer, it is definitely money well spent. I gargle with better stuff than US Budweiser.

Here's a history lesson on the name. and it is interesting. There is a town in the Bohemia region of the Czech Republic, which in German is called Budweis. The residents are called Budweiser. In Czech it's Cesky Budjejovice, ( with a "hook" over the letter "C" but otherwise believe that' s the correct spelling). Up until 1945 there was a large German population living there which was expelled due to the war. Most of them moved to Germany.

Beer is still brewed there and is called Budvar in Czech (which means Budweiser in German). The Czechs wanted to import it under that name after the fall of Communism but could not do so because Anheuser-Busch bought the name Budweiser long ago. Therefore the Czechs have to import it here under the name Czechvar.

Right after the fall of the Iron Curtain there was a segment on the news which showed workers in a brewery in the Czech Republic taste testing US Budweiser. They said it tasted like lemonade and was suitable for children! LOL

Hey, talk about some nice country Mr. Adams. No fleas on the part of the world you're in. Taken some nice mulies out that way some time back. Love the area, but then I've lived in so many parts of that state and traveled about all the rest so I'm somewhat biased about the variety of beauty all over the state. Moved here seven years ago from Lincoln County. You know, the skiing, Mescalero Apache, quarterhorse racing and Lincoln County War part of the state. Still get back for visits when we can.

Oh and I'm a Dos Exxes and Bohemia kind of beer drinker.
