Re: Prayer Request
Thanks to everyone for your prayers.
My father had exploratory laparoscopic surgery, last week. Biopsies of his abdominal spots show cancer. It is considered stage IV, because of how far it has spread. There is still no word on exactly which kind of cancer it is, and there is no thought on the origin (the original tumor) of this cancer. My dad would need more exploratory surgery to look for it, but we are told that he needs some recuperatory time, before that can be considered. There is still no word on removing the mass in his duodenum.
While dad was on the table, he got a feeding tube. Apparently it is connected to his Jejunum (the middle of the small intestine). He can receive liquid nutrition through this tube, like TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition). He also has a drain/ burp tube in his chest area, but I do not know where that goes to.
Dad has had a few more problems with blood pressure, and heart rate, which may be related to his previous lack of proper hydration. He is receiving IV hydration, and some of his vital signs have become more normal.
We have speculated about how my dad got his cancer. My mother has told me that my stepdad has asbestosis. He worked for 30-odd years at the Tenneco Rifnery, in Chalmette, as a Lab Tester, running all sorts of samples. He was around all kinds of hydrocarbons, including benzene, plus he was exposed to asbestos. My mother believes that dad has mesothelioma. Mesothelioma can affect your digestive tract, as well as, your lungs. Without knowing the kind of cancer that he has, we are still left without a course of treatment. Today, a surgeon that is filling in for my dad's surgeon, guessed that dad has just a few months to live, under his current conditions. Dad's oncologist is more optomistic, but we await more information on the cancer, in order to develop a treatment plan.

Re: Prayer Request
Fellas & Gals,
What my dad has is adenocarcinoma. My family has been in contact with M.D. Anderson, and they rejected him. They believe that dad is too far gone for them to help him. One of his doctors questioned the benefit of draining his abdomen every couple of days. We have been told that dad has anywhere from a few days to live, to as much as a month. He continues to take Dilaudid, plus a pain patch. His nutrition is spotty, due to a blockage. He is being given some IV hydration. Carla & I are going to visit him, tomorrow. Many of our family members have been with him. Mom & dad will have been married for 37 years, later this month. He has been a solid, hard-working man, and a good, level-headed father to 8 children. He never, ever treated me like an outcast, even though I am not his natural child. We all got treated the same, though the younger kids could sway him more than us older children did. Dad was a member of the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers Union, and the treasurer of the Refinery Credit Union. When his union went on strike, he got a job with Ogden Foods, and catered convetions, in the NewOrleans area. Dad was a longtime member of the Pegasus Parade Krewe, and even served as Duke. When I was younger, we all went to the Mardi Gras parades, then dad would drive us around town, so that we could throw our beads to the people that we drove past. I don't want this to sound like an obituary for the man. I am just remebering nearly 40 years of good times with my stepdad.

Re: Prayer Request...UPDATED July 11, 2011
Hello, all,
Today, Monday, July 11, 2011, my stepfather passed away. He was alert & talking, earlier in the day. At around 4:35 p.m., he took a few halting breaths, and did not take anymore. It looked like he went while he was sleeping. Funeral arangements are pending.
My entire family thanks you all, for all of your prayers & thoughts.
Sincerely,
Shawn

To create such a good woman as Carla, he must have been a great man. Give your bride a hug and a kiss from me. I am sorry for her loss.
Godspeed Mr. Mullet, thank you for all you did.

Sounds like a your stepfather was a real solid man. My condolences to you and your family. But, know this, he will have no more pain and thank God, it wasn't a real protracted suffering.
