It's time to start sending deposits, please. Meat/hog hunters, $375 total (and no guarantee on the hogs). Others, let me know what animals you are interested in so I can give you a total. You can switch your credit to something else once the hunt starts if you need to.
Thanks

I think I sent half in already. When do you want the balance?
I am still interested in a big ol' Chital doe, but may be tempted to change my mind once I get there.
Thanks, and most of all I'm really looking forward to seeing all y'all.

86er, I believe the hog/meat hunt was quoted at $350. I have already paid a $100 deposit. Does your last post mean you would like for us to pay the balance now?

Here's what I foresee as cull:
2 scimitar each with broken horns, $750 each
2 Longhorn Steers (awesome eating!) $800 each (1600 pounds each @ .50 per pound)
1 Watusi 1 year old $500 and I'll give you 1/4 meat and the whole hide
1 fallow buck white has two different antlers and a bum back leg $900

Re: Leverguns Texas Summer Safari AUGUST 8-10th
OK Thanks.
So the $350 is female/doe of the species like an Axis doe.
I've got questions about what to bring - bedding and such too - but I'll read up the thread to see if it's been addressed.
OK - "accomodations" provided, we can figure chow out there. That makes it easy.
I saw in one of the initial replies a "ram" referred to for $350. That's $350 on top of the meat hunt right?
A ram like this?

or this?

How about this? Spanish Goat Ram?:

I'm thinkin I might gift Smitty a Ram and I'm trying to figure out what exactly that means - sorry for the exotic noob questions
I've basically participated in "redneck" hunting
prior to this - whitetail, hog, bobcat, dove, duck, goose, rabbit, squirrel, etc. - nothing exotic.
I'm really looking forward to this!

A ram is a sheep with the curled horns like the black one or white one. I will select one with you for $350 total. The goats are Feral goats or spanish catalina goats. They cost $550 total (but I may cull one on this hunt for less).

OIC. I will want to go with a ram for sure then - something new for me. And yes, a sheep is a ram, a goat is a billy.... man
That won't take much of a rifle. Perhaps if my newly completed swede 94 sporter (bought chopped) would be the thing - just loaded some 129 grain hornadys to test... I'll see what Smitty is thinking and let you know if he wants to go to a corsican...
A 30-30 with 150 grain loads would be good too.
I'll probably bring the 30-30 Texican I just bought or one of my 94's and the Swede if it groups well.

Re: Leverguns Texas Summer Safari AUGUST 8-10th
Don't be fooled by the rams - they are tough and tenacious. Remind me to show you the video of the client that shot a balck hawaian with a 30-06 5 times over the course of 10 minutes chasing it all over the ranch. Terry Barlow, one of our hunt winners shot his with a 308 right through the boiler room and he shot it again when it ran about 30 yards. I just got one with the 30-30 that I hit through the shoulder and two more times as it ran up a hill. When I dragged it back down, it decided to kick and fight for a few second on its last breath! Anything that works well on whitetail deer is good for rams, but don't think they are soft or easy.

Tougher than their size would indicate huh? Maybe a .270 with 130 grain triple shocks would do better on them? Or I can go the other way and use a 35 Rem... which seems to put them down better in your experience?
I habitually shoot for the heart/lung but that usually means a 50 to 100 yard run - for bucks.

Which license do I need? Just the regular 101 Resident Hunting?
No matter what, I don't think I have my Hunter's Ed cert anymore since I haven't thought about it in years.

Thought I'd throw this out there. I don't know how it's been around Hondo this year, but we've had a particularly bad summer for ticks in the London area (Kimble County). In fact, my 2-year-old niece contracted Lyme disease a couple of months ago at my Dad's place just west of there. So, be sure and pack some bug juice.

Re: Leverguns Texas Summer Safari AUGUST 8-10th
I can't go, work issues, but I'll suggest that those who do go get some of the spray with permethrin in it where you spray your boots and pant legs to kill ticks. You can't spray this stuff on your skin, but it is safe on outer clothing and boots/shoes and such. It is effective. Ask any Doctor who has treated it, you do not want to get Lyme disease. For those of you going, I hope you have a great time.
p.s. Don't forget to post the pictures as soon as you get back.

Deep Woods OFF, Works good, lasts a long time and won't rust, bust or collect dust.
Boots instead of sandals, long pants instead of shorts, and if you can stand it a long sleeve shirt. Now, Joe will be wearing short sleeve shirt, shorts, and low top shoes.
I usually wear a pair of light hunting boots, light long paints, ya'll don't even want to see my white legs, and SS shirt. Big brimmed hat helps to keep the sun off you also. If you have a Therma cell bring it along. Mosquitoes have a love affair with me. As long as I'm around no one else will be bothered by them because they will be sucking ME dry.

All the bedding and eating goods are included. You need shorts, T-Shirt, low boots and a sombrero. If you are Ricky's friend you need long pants, long sleeved shirt, tall boots and a parka with a hood. You may sight in, but no long shooting sessions, my Perre David Deer are using the rifle range as a home. At $10K each I don't think you want to risk a ricochet or other mishap. If someone wants to bid a few bucks on the rabbit and varmint hunt that will be one night and one morning you should bring a .22 or other appropriate gun for that.
IF ANYONE IF THINKING OF SWITCHING UP TO SOMETHING BIGGER - THERE ARE SOME NILGAI FOR $750 THIS HUNT ONLY, ONE SMALL BISON AVAILABLE AT $800, TWO WATUSI AT $750 EACH. THIS IS HALF OFF FOR FELLOW FORUM MEMBERS!

It's an auction thing - highest bidder gets to go. There are cottontails, maybe a handful of jacks and could be a coon, 'possum or ringtail. I think .223 is too much noise and power.

Re: Leverguns Texas Summer Safari AUGUST 8-10th
Jacob's Four Horned Sheep:
That's obviously a ram.

And a ewe.
Are these pictures representative or are they like a super-trophy class - show bread sheep? I'm thinking the latter as the ram's really got some head gear there, an old man - a younger/shorter horned version ram would be great. Now that'd make an outstanding mount.... can we upgrade to this? That is, from Ram to JFHS for the difference? Are you talking ram or ewe? I have a feeling that I'll be sending a an upgrade check for Smitty ( and mabe me too) - I think he'd really get a kick outta that - and ya'll have to keep this to yourselves as I think I'll spring it on him at the camp...
I can see the mount hanging at his farm right now.... yeah
Might have to come up with something creative to surprise him... like "sorry - we ran out of ram slots... (long pause) ... you OK with a Jacob's Four Horned Ram?
I can just hear him now "a wut?"....
All of his other buddies will say "what the heck is that?"
He'd love telling them what it is and about the hunt. Probably generate some more business for Joe!
Joe, you're a good salesman

Based on a lot of folks' locales, it looks like we're gonna have somewhat of a "levergun convoy" headed down IH-35 come friday after next.
Cool.

The Jacobs Four-Horned Sheep on the ranch have about 1/2 the top length and nearly the same side horn length as the one pictured. One is bigger than the other but no by much.

That sounds great! Can I upgrade for the price over the ram? $150/per right? If so, I'll put a check in the mail.86er wrote:The Jacobs Four-Horned Sheep on the ranch have about 1/2 the top length and nearly the same side horn length as the one pictured. One is bigger than the other but no by much.

I think I saw something like that on an album cover back in my younger days when I was REALLY into heavy metal...O.S.O.K. wrote:![]()
