45 ACP SIXGUN

Post by JimT »

This is from years and years ago, during the life of the old Sixgunner.Com website. I picked up an Old Model Ruger .357 Magnum and sent it to Jim Stoh. I wanted a "pocket pistol" in .45 ACP. I had "flat-topped" it and recut the rear sight. Jim rebarreld it and rechambered the cylinder, cleaned it up and blued it.

After I used it for awhile I sent it to Cosby Custom Guns up in Evansville, IN and had him remodel the top strap like a Colt SAA. I also had him nickle-plate it.

Carried in a Roy's Pancake holster, the 1911 magazine makes a nice speedloader.

I really like the short barreled sixguns ,that would be take only in 38 WCF. to go with my 1892 short rifle.

Well .. I would give it to you Jack, but see .. here is the problem. When my wife and I moved to Mozambique I sold it to a friend who wanted it and I can't give away their gun! Sorry. :D

Nice, I have a 7 1/2” 45 Ruger with both cylinders. Had a 4 5/8” convertible years ago, great gun.

I have the twin of Jim's but obviously without the inscription and engraving.

Here it is with the 45 acp cyl (pretty much permanently installed).

And with the 45 Colt cyl shown with 386 L Frame .357 for size comparison.

Any of you guys take the plunge for a FA .500 Wyoming Express? I thought that would be cool but a .44 mag kicks plenty for me :D

I pretty much have the ACP cylinder in mine also.
I had the rear of each cylinder milled off so there are no recessed case heads. There is no real reason to have the case heads recessed and it's easier to see loaded chambers.

When I bought my Stainless .45 colt Blackhawk, .45 acp convertibles weren't available. But a good smith dealt with that. I have several Smith's in .45 acp, by far my most accurate turns out to be a 1917 from the Brazilian contract. Who'd have thought that. It really likes cast and is pretty forgiving with regards to components accuracy wise. Some guns just like to shoot.

My 4 5/8ths Ruger likes the .45 ACP. It does well with anything, but .45 ACP is where it does best.

Not a Wyoming Express but the ballistic twin (500 JRH). This is an FA83 converted to 500JRH by Jack Huntington.

Can't handle full throttle loads (no need either) anymore but I like the gun so much I can't bring myself to sell it. Put the Pachmyrs on it to get a better grip due to waning hand strength.

At the risk of offending Sixgun, here is my Uberti Cattleman Sabre. A .45 Colt sixgun, and a couple years ago I scored a .45 ACP cylinder for it. Dropped it off at my gunsmith and he fitted it perfectly. It is a ton of fun and my go-to SAA carry gun.

Uberti's I have looked at recently have been finished inside and out pretty nicely and fitted well. And shot great. At today's prices for a shooter you have to work hard to do better.

Beautiful gun, YK! Very nice and I've always found the birdshead grip appealing. (never owned one though).

I had a 4 5/8” Blackhawk convertible 45 Colt/45 ACP for over 40 years, then in 2015 I got Vaquero Birdshead SS 3 3/4” 45 ACP from Ruger to replace an unrepairable Single Seven. When I got this gun 45 Colt/45 ACP, both the Blackhawk and Vaquero were sold down the river.
Mostly use the 45 ACP cylinder.

My first experience firing 45 acp was in a Blackhawk. May have been my first firing of a single action, but definitely first for a centerfire single action.

I have some weird shooting firsts. My first 38, 357, and 45 Colts were in rifles. First 22 in a revolver. First 30-30 in a single shot

I have passed on several Jerry Miculek model 625 Smiths but in hindsight I think they're probably pretty nice guns.

Very cool!

Alon w/ two S&W 1917s and a 1937 I have these two, a Model of 1989 and the Bisley convertible. They get more use than the old Smiths these days.

Wth Adirondack Jack's Cowboy 45 Special cartridge, I can stuff the performance and size of the 45ACP in my 45 Colt cylinder. Yeah, it has a bit of bullet jump to the forcing cone, but at handgun distances, I haven't noticed any decrease in accuracy. A big plus is the ability to download the powder charge and keep the same performance.
