The speed of the collapse was shocking all right. I wonder how many have drowned, poor souls. Now we await the investigation of the ship's captain and crew.

This showed that the ship evidently had a power-outage right before the impact.

There were some vehicles just making it over the span before the collsion - didn't see any right there at impact thankfully.

Think the news said that it wouldn't be the first time the ship has had issues with propulsion. Reported 6 missing (road crew fixing potholes in the road) but sonar shows cars also on the bottom, so it will surely rise.

Losing steering (dropping the load, hydraulic failure, etc.) is an issue that has potential with all ships......unfortunately.

In 1978 the Atlantic Trader, well past its prime, lost it's steering in the main channel of L. A. Harbor. It hit the end of a floating drydock, which probably saved quite a few lives, they slammed into the bow of an FFG before tearing into the dock to which the FFG was tied. The amount of damage a ship, and the Atlantic Trader was what used to be called a coastal freighter, can do when it hits things is frightening.

The dry dock took the brunt of the damage. It tore off at least twenty feet. The dock was repaired by simply removing the last section. It effectively shortened the drydock, but that was the only economically feasible solution.

The FFG was struck in the bow just behind the sonar array. The ship was just about finished with an extensive refit. The cost to replace the bow section and the sonar array was more than the refit. But you have to hand it to the ship's damage control party. They got the watertight doors closed before the flooding could spread, and that was after they entered what was left of the space to check for injured folks.

I'll tell you this. If you have an emergency on land or at sea and need cool heads that can think, plan and execute when all hell is breaking loose, you want a USN damage control specialists.

Dock repairs were quite extensive because it below the dock were all of the utilities, water, fire water, electricity, acetylene, and sewage. The repairs took several months.

"........you want a USN damage control specialists."

Way back in the "old navy" there were the u.s. naval enlisted rates shipfitters and damage controlmen. Then circa 1972 those rates were combined into hull maintenance technician (HT). Then in 1987 the rates were split with a new DC designation. Problem was few HTs wanted to change to DC so the powers that were had close (or slow) the HT rate to advancements. If you had any plans to be a lifer (in '87-'88) and was a HT then you had to convert to DC to make rank. In the spring of '88 new DC "A" school reinforcements began arriving in the fleet from training command at treasure island naval base.

And how welcome they were in repair divisions on the tin cans. Overnight all of the primary maintenance of.....

p-250 firefighting and deflooding pumps
m.s.a. o.b.a.s and co2 & purple k fire extinguishers
a.f.f.f. foam generators
fire hoses and nozzles
and....
all of the accoutrements inside the repair and accident/incident (n.b.c./c.b.r.) lockers.

instantly became the responsibility of the new damage controlmen and off the shoulders of HTs
a-sailor-checks-the-seal-on-the-mask-of-his-oxygen-breathing-apparatus-oba-5c5484-1024.jpg
With the new damage controlmen came civilian type turnout gear and s.c.b.a.s to eventually replace the chemical cartridge o.b.a.s as pictured above.....

When we disposed of spent o.b.a. (oxygen breathing apparatus) cartridges overboard underway from the ship's fantail (stern) we had to warn the sonar techs. ahead of time as the cartridges would occasionally explode with the force of a grenade if there was oil in the water. You can well imagine the dangers of the sensitivities of those things in a nautical firefighting/flooding situation.

This is a good real-time video explaining what seems to have gone wrong and the counter-actions the crew took. A sure-enough tragedy. God bless the lost souls.

The Navy kept outdated things like O.B.A.'s for years after just about every other fire department on the planet had changed to SCBA's. No reason to get rid of something just because it got folks killed.

Pardon, the reason o.b.a.s were used on ships was the flat contour allowed a person wearing to fit through the quick actuating round escape scuttles on hatches. Sailors donning half-hour S.C.B.A.s could not fit through scuttles until specialty flatter contour bottles were developed. We had that obvious problem in '88 with the new s.c.b.a.s that came with the reintroduced damage controlman rate. The quick acting scuttles were too small so the entire hatch had to be laboriously undogged and redogged for access. Doors through bulkheads were no problem fitwise.

Once material condition zulu is set (every scuttle, hatch, door, deck drain and ventilation duct secured) for general quarters (fire, flood or battle stations), then to undog without consent of the ood, cheng, mpa, or dca through a designated repair locker on-scene leader (HT/DC) was captain's mast offense. This is why officer's country staterooms & chief's mess/berthing had non-watertight doors. Otherwise a lowly HT/DC FN (E3) who happened to be a designated repair locker on-scene leader could order them all to be dogged-in and perish in flames/flood.....

Call me stupid, but what was the ship doing so far outside the center of the channel in the first place?

I'm puzzled by this as well, especially with two local pilots taking the ship out of the port. For a ship of that size and load, they were moving right along at 6+ knots. Seems a bit too fast....

I saw a video explaining the movements of the ship! The ship was in the channel when it lost power! The exit side it the right side of the channel! The video said that when the engine power came back on, indicated by the black smoke out of the stacks, they put it into reverse. It said that single screw ships will veer when ships hit revers without rudder control. That is when the ship veered right and left the channel. It also said that they dropped anchor, but it just was being drug along. Now being discussed as to whether it was intentional or not and who should pay for the bridge repair!

It is hindsight and armchair-engineering, but it would seem like with a billion dollars or more at stake, there would be some protections beyone hoping everything goes right. I know you can't just pound in a few T-posts to bump back a couple hundred million pounds of cargo ship, but other bridges have areas of fill designed to ground a large ship that would encroach. Probably other technologies could be implemented as well.

It just seems like too much of our infrastructure is designed in ways too easy for an accident to cause a huge catastrophe (one reason I don't think we can trust ourselves with nuclear fission as a power generation method). Then you add in the relative ease with which a terrorist could do the same thing on purpose.

I can see the Democrat leadership salivating at the thought of allowing (or causing) several such catastrophes this year prior to the election in order to indimidate and regulate and seize even more power.

One other question is why the bridge and/or ship wouldn't have insurance that would be involved; some have suggested that if there were foul play involved it would be to the bad-guys advantage NOT to have any insurance probing around. One would hope that such a concern would be negated by the thoroughness with which a transportation safety board would investigate, but of course the latter might have a politically-tainted style of investigating - not like we haven't seen that kind of thing before.

Insurance evidently WILL be involved - so how come Biden is promising that those of us who work for a living (Trump Supporters, for the most part) are going to pay for the replacement.

Oh, Uncle Sugar WILL help the insurance companies out with the costs.

I'll have to research and see if I can revisit the source, but it's said that
you and I paid 90 cents on the dollar for the Twin Towers collapse. The
insurance companies paid 10%.

By law in most major jurisdictions, large construction projects have to have
terrorism insurance. After 9/11, the insurance companies rescinded those policies
until the terms of payment became more favorable. Big projects nationwide ground
to a sudden halt.

So, just like the big banks, if there's a crisis, Congress will bail 'em out. And if Congress won't,
then they'll just stall. Ask any Floridian who's lost their modest home in a hurricane in the
last two years.

Rant off.....

CCP propaganda or CCP whistleblower revelation...?

We are probably supposed to just write this off as sloppiness, and then ordinary accident, but this is just the latest in a string of somewhat suspicious things...

https://rumble.com/v4muvyq-the-ship-wit ... ering.html

Especially interesting in the context of recent crane discoveries that even CNN admitted a couple weeks ago...

https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/07/politics ... index.html

The current crop of people running things are in bed with too many lovers at once, and that spells trouble sooner or later.

Interesting times for sure…

The four movies 1984, Blade Runner, Total Recall, and Brazil, all come to mind.

Of course everything is just labeled a ‘conspiracy theory’ if you’re a liberal… then later on when it’s proven to be true, they just shrug it off and say “well that’s old news so it doesn’t matter anymore…” 🙄
