Re: Texas Independence Day!
A relative on my mother's side of the the family joined a group of Ohio Volunteers to go fight with Texas. They walked all the way from western OH to Texas but the by the time they arrived, the war was over. I would imagine some of them stayed in TX, but the rest turned around and walked home.
Happy Texas Independence Day!

That’s a long walk! Fantastic story though. We won’t get up to help a neighbor these days and those men walked to war!
That shows a greater quality of man if you ask me.

Somewhere, I have a picture of Herr Fritzinger that was taken on the farm many years later. Between the two sides of the family, we have pages of relatives that were in the Volunteer units of the Civil War, with many that didn't make it home. Several died at Andersonville.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Sat Mar 02, 2024 7:42 am That’s a long walk! Fantastic story though. We won’t get up to help a neighbor these days and those men walked to war!

I just read the other day that Ohio was second only to NY in KIAs during the conflict.
Different times for sure.

Can't say I'm from here, and while I learned to walk on a ship, I've decided that standing on Texas soil is home! Mom always told me I entered the US via Dallas' only airport in 1953. Happy Birthday Texas!

Not from Texas, but came darn close to moving there decades ago. The way the state is where I reside now, is getting like California, I wish I had moved there. Do have a Grandfather and Great-Grandmother on Moms side, from the great state of Texas.

Happy Independance Day to all you Texans! I don't have any roots to Texas, but I have a great admiration for the Spirit of
Texans. I think Texas is a great addition to the US and I wish more states were like it.

Another day of remembrance in Texas today. At about 6AM on the morning of March 6th, 1836, defense of the Alamo fell and begat the battle cry heard across the plain of San Jacinto..
"Remember the Alamo !".
"Remember the Alamo !".

Blackhawk, I have seen those three words attributed to a great Texas hero, Deaf Smith.
