The main issue besides the old guy yanking the trigger is the coarse factory front sight with "Widescan" hood. With the William FoolProof at its lowest elevation, the bullets were striking six to 8 inches above point of aim. I believe a slightly taller front bead -- I am partial to ivory -- would help me get the most out of this rifle with my visual abilities.
The Speer 130-grain FP brought to my attention on these pages by Jim T looks to be a dandy bullet, especially over a dose of CFE 223, though six inches high. I tried it over 38 grains of LVR with CCI magnum pistol primers per Jim/Mic M.'s guidance and it shows promise, but oddly shot both higher and a couple of inches right.
The Lee 309-170F, gas-checked and powder-coated at 178 grains, shows promise over 22 grains of AA 5744. I had another 10 of the cast loads over 5744 and over 10 grains of Unique, and had fun plinking the steel swingers at 100 yards.
