Bought this mill as a pile of steel about 40 years ago and put it together, it`s been a good friend.
Some pictures from those years.

These old bodies of ours have a "Use By" date on them. Some earlier .. some later .. but they all get used up. We don't like it. We try to fight it. Because we were made for eternity! And that desire for eternity is in every human.

I understand a little of the sorrow and struggle you are having sir.
All I can say is .. enjoy what was .. prepare for what will be ... walk through what is.

Well said Jim. This is not our home, not our eternal one anyway.

Sorry Lenn!

Sorry to hear Lenn. Its never easy to admit when we are beyond some activities. It's best to be honest with ourselves, but it's never easy.
Take care.

Is your mill by chance a Frick or Farquhar ? Also what make is your power unit ? I fooled with traction engines and steel wheel tractors many year ago so it’s only natural machinery of this type still intrests me

I know it hurts, Lenn.

Maybe you can sell it or donate it to a young fellow who will give your mill life for the next 40 years.

Thanks for the pictures.

The mill is a Howell and the power unit is a International 6 cyl. gas.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words, yep it`s one of the things in my life that i loved and it is tough to give it up.
It will just sit there and rot away and when i`m gone and someone else buys this property they can fix it up.
I`m happy we got to share it with you guys over the years. :)

Image

Edit, after looking a the pics i stand corrected about the power unit, the one in the picture was the motor that we had when we first got the sawmill and i can`t remember the exact specs on it but probably is a International gas engine.
It only lasted a short time the i replaced it with the current unit that`s on it now a International gas.

Sorry to see that you need to part ways. Praying you will find a hobby that replaces it.

Yep.

That is part of the responsibility and the joy of growing old.

Part of our duty is to teach others as those who came before us taught us.

Unfortunately, for some reason, our ‘baby boomer’ generation seems to be having a hard time with that.

Those who came before us managed to somehow, so we need to find young ones to take under OUR wings, and teach them how to be fully fledged men and women.

Sorry to hear you're shutting her down.
I'm glad I was able to learn about sawmills some from the "Foxfire" books and the Woodwrights shop on PBS.
I still see some remains of old sawmills here in the Black Hills.
I'm a fan of doing things the old ways. They can be timeless.

Aw man , sorry you are not able to run the mill any longer Lenn.
I was fortunate to spend some time years ago with a sawyer and got to help slab many hundreds of board feet of oak, hickory, beech. It was enjoyable and a great learning experience.
My condolences.

Thanks guys, that little rug rat in the picture bucked me his hole life never waned to learn anything, if he would of took some interest he could take over using the mill.
He`s getting better at helping out now at 44 years old.
I also see a lot of old abandoned mills around the country witch is the idea of the sign, someday someone will see it and think too themselves there must of been a guy that really cared for the old mill. :)
Sawing lumber is a great thing and fun though there is a lot of tinkering to keep a old one running right but guess that`s part of the experience.
I`ve been blessed with a good woman that helps with things. :)
