410 fun.

Post by Nath »

Now I love my larger smooth bores but sometimes a wee 410 despite making no sense makes plenty sense!
The pigeon are hitting the barley now but not in devastating numbers here so as Jess likes boiled pigeon I got under a few.
A few good wing shots and a few ambushed from under their favourite trees around the barley field.

Well done Nath, where I'm currently living there are lots of pigeons and even more of the crow family but alas I can't do anything about it :(
I saw a a nice looking Remington 870 Express .410 on gun trader but until I get some land to hunt on I had to pass.
If more men loved and cherished their wives as much as I love bacon the world would be a much better place.

Nicely done Nath! Yes the 410 does everything the big bores can do, with aplomb most of times as well.

Think about it, 12ga 1200 fps give or take, 24gram (between 13/16& 7/8) 1 oz, 1 1/8 oz
410 1200 fps give or take and 11/16 oz
The difference is about 6-8 peices of shot .
If you can't hit a bird with a 410 ya cant hit it with a 12 any easier!
Biggest thing is most 410s are over choked as I've said before.

Nath nave been buying selling and shooting the 8 and 9 shot from italy. They are liaded to full power. Out of aderringer they are stout. Even the 10" T/C Contender buck good. I really enjoy loading them with Triple 7.just sold an all black tactical 20" Mossberg. Thanks for the topic.

Was it you Nath making low velocity 410 loads? If so did you ever settle on a powder/ payload ?
I ask only because I might have to do a little indoor pest removal for some folks in the barn. Would really like to NOT do too much damage
Of course the air rifle works but I won't be able to ' flock shoot ' these pests...

Nice to see you are killing some flying rats ! :D
Have you thought about putting choke tubes in it? That way you could pick and choose.
I still think the perfect chokes for 410 are improved cylinder and modified.

I'm still looking for a low velocity/ sub sonic load for use inside a barn.

A couple of weeks ago I decided to revisit my early 410 days.
First shotgun I got was for Christmas from my hunting partner, may dad, A single barrel break action, exposed hammer rig. When I was older I purchased a Remington 1100 12 gauge and since then I wanted one in 410. Well a couple of weeks ago one became available and I snagged it. It came with 5 choke tubes. I have had a case of 410 Winchester AA's sitting around for years! Looks like I will be reloading some 410's soon. All I need to do is get wads and some Alliant 300-mp powder. After some reading I found that the 2400, I use for magnum pistol loads, is a little hot and will shorten the reloading life of the hulls.
However if anyone out there has a powder and hull combination that is conducive to maximizing the number of reloads I can get out of a hull I would appreciate the information.

296 has been the staple of skeet shooters for years.
Lilgun was made for 410.
Go to Ballistic Products website, they should have everything you need from wads, shot , powders but most of all order their Small Bore Manual. It has a ton of load data.

Good luck with the case life! 410 cases don't last long I found. It's quite high pressure for a plastic case. I find they swell around the payload area..

If your Remington has a good chamber it will help. A slack chambe has the plastic swelling. I actually prefer a2400. It gives good power.

Ordered some wads and the book from Ballistic Products ! Will do a little reading before I order some powder. Been reading some good things about Alliant Power Pro 300MP and 296 on Shotgun World forum concerning the 410.

Isn't 296 similar to h110?

H110 isn't bad in 410 but I still prefer the new 2400. Not tried the 300mp.

I tested the new choke yesterday on pigeons over wheat.
The first seven birds fell to nine shots. The ratio has improved and distance not affected!
Well worth the effort 👍🏻

I read that 296 and 110 are equivalent powders. No personal experience though. I do have plenty of 2400 for things I reload for already.

H110 and 296 are right next to each other on the burn rate chart, pretty much interchangeable BUT use caution when developing loads with large volumes of powder.
When you get your manual you'll have a much better idea for the powders.
I use Lilgun and 296.
There is also Alliant 410. I have not tried it or the 300mp.

See, I told you it was over choked!

Patterned it today at 40yds.
Paper was only 19" x 17.5".
11/16oz of 7.5 shot.
82 on paper out of a possible 241.
About 30%>
I'm quite impressed!
