HUMOR - Living in the south

Post by Ysabel Kid »

I love living here! :D

Southern sayings...

Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit.

It's been hotter'n a goat's butt in a pepper patch .

He fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.

Have a cup of coffee--it's already been 'saucered and blowed.'

She's so stuck up, she'd drown in a rainstorm.

It's so dry, the trees are bribing the dogs.

My cow died last night, so I don't need your bull.

He's as country as cornflakes.

This is gooder'n grits.

Busier than a cat covering stuff on a marble floor.

If things get any better, I may have to hire someone to help me enjoy it.

I'm 'bout as nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

Busy as a moth in a mitten.

Happy as a clam at high tide.

**********************************************************

Notice to Northerners moving to the South: Save all manner of bacon grease. You will be instructed on how to use it shortly.

Just because you can drive on snow and ice does not mean Southerners can. Stay home the two days of the year it snows.

If you do run your car into a ditch, don't panic. Four men in the cab of a four-wheel pick-up with a 12-pack of beer and a tow chain will be along shortly. Don't try to help them. Just stay out of their way. This is what they live for.

You can ask Southerners for directions, but unless you already know the positions of key hills, trees and rocks, you're better off trying to find it yourself.

Remember: Y'all is singular. All y'all is plural. All y'all's is plural possessive.

Get used to hearing, "You ain't from around here, are you?"

Don't be worried that you don't understand anyone. They don't understand you, either.

The first Southern expression to creep into a transplanted Northerner's vocabulary is the adjective "big ol", as in "big ol truck", or "big ol boy". "Fixin'" (as in "I'm fixin' to go to the store") is 2nd, and "Y'all" is 3rd.

As you are cursing the person driving 15 mph in a 55 mph zone directly in the middle of the road, remember: ALL Southern folks learned to drive on a John Deere, and this is the proper speed and lane position for that vehicle.

If you hear a Southerner exclaim, "Hey, y'all, watch this!", get out of his way. These are likely the last words he will ever say, or worse still, that you will ever hear.

Most Southerners do not use turn signals; they ignore those who do. In fact, if you see a signal blinking on a car with a Southern license plate, you may rest assured that it was already turned on when the car was purchased.

If it can't be fried in bacon grease, it ain't worth cooking, let alone eating.

The wardrobe you always brought out in Sept can wait until Dec.

If there is the prediction of the slightest chance of even the most minuscule accumulation of snow, your presence is required at the local grocery store. It does not matter if you need anything from the store. It is just something you're supposed to do.

Satellite dishes are very popular in the South. When you purchase one, it is positioned directly in front of the house. This is logical, bearing in mind that the dish cost considerably more than the house and should, therefore, be prominently displayed.

Be advised that in the South, "He needed killin" is a valid defense.

I use "big ol" in conversation.

"Y'all" can be replaced with "Yuns", i.e."Yuns" "All yuns" and "Yuns's". 8)

I miss Dixie. I spent my early years there. Tell me, do they still call the Civil War" the war of northern aggression?" My great grand parents did. This was 30+ years ago though. 1886.

I've always been taught that there are two kinds of Yankees.

There are Yankees and D. Yankees.

Yankees come and go. D. Yankees come and won't go.

"How y'all doin'"...usually a statement, not a question

"Look at that sucker, shines like a diamond in a goat's a**."... referring to a near new vehicle.

NOT a Civil War...northern prapaganda used to dis-credit the southern states right to leave the union....."War between the States"; "War of Northern Agression"; "War for Southern Independence" "War for States Rights". If you want to resign your citizenship then you have that constitutional right.....10 have that right.....100 have that right?.....1,000?....10,000?

When I was a child, I knew several ole people who "still smelled the powder burnin'" and wondered when "this cease-fire" was going to end..

Governance at the consent of the governed, a fundamental concept of our founding fathers, died at Appomattox. Before April 1865, we were citizens of our State and country; after, we are but subjects of the federal empire.

Well said Mr. Tomclink. Many feel Pres. Lincoln was one of our best . I feel strongly that it could be argued He was a tyrannt. Probably an unpopular statement in today's ignorant/politically correct world. 1886.

Old Honest Abe violated the Constitutional Rights of more Americans than any other president in the history of our country.

Oddly enough, most of the Yankees that move into our area are from Florida and they are driving the property taxes up. Da.n carpet baggers!
Well Ysabel, sounds like you have adapted well to South Carolina and can carry on a passable conversation. Have you learned to put together a decent Frogmore Stew?

Thanks Longfin. I do qualify in the "darn Yankee" department, because if I have my way, SC is home for good! I couldn't cook a piece of toast with a toaster, so no, I can't say that I have (though I can grill almost anything! )

Good to see that most folks here understand the true nature of the War. I was always catching stuff up north when I was growing up because I would side with the south when "Civil War" history was taught. Usually called a racist. Nothing could be further from the truth - my Dad was a history teacher before becoming an FBI agent (and in the military before that), so I was just taught the truth! In many ways, though my family is all from up north, I have "come home" - spiritually, if nothing else. :D

I lived in a single wide until I was eight. I also walked to my 6 room school house and went fishin' in the crawdad hole. My dad was a pro ball player too. Its all true . I wish I could go back from time to time just for a visit. 1886.
