38-55 ammo

Post by Old Savage »

Not sure what these would be worth in today’s market. Seemed reasonable 7 years ago. Top box are 30-30s.

Based on what I've seeing, I'd say multiply by 2.5X.

But I expect to get the LGD (Leverguns Forum Discount) when you sell -- and I'll gladly give you a 50% profit over the marked price.

2.5x is way too low.

4x is close. I think 5x is possible.

people are crazy. prices are sky high but people are still paying them.

Fred,
Very collectible…….check out internet prices and take maybe 20% off ….

Off the top of my head I’d say $60-$80 a box……..remember, today $100 buys what $80 did last year……if every business out there can raise prices, so can we. ……it’s called inflation and it was Bidens and Obama s way of “spreading the wealth” by printing money and giving it to people who don’t like to work.

I have a few boxes of those from the same period and price range. Never felt a need to shoot em. Rather I reload using my own cast lead, resized 30-30 range pickup brass, primers that I paid $15/thousand and powder from the same period. These was a good savings in reloading when the factory prices were $16-$20/box, but now I couldn't afford to shoot if I didn't reload.

That is what I have done. I have both 375 and 38-55 brass.

Shooting the old legacy calibers is only going to get more expensive. I just paid $102 for 2 boxes of new production Remington 32 Special. Had not seen any of that in North Western Vermont in 2 years. Back then I paid $26 a box.

And THAT is the reason many of us have moulds, lead and other assorted equipment…….I think nothing of shooting several hundred rounds of 40-60 Marlin, 40-82 Win., 45-90, and on and on…..

A wise man would learn to cast and stock on supplies in this volatile times.

As the old saying goes, “it’s better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it.”

I still buy a lot of projectiles, saving my meager stash of lead for when that is no longer an option. I wish I had more pure lead tho'...

Griff, the Vermont legislature is in the process of passing legislation eliminating lead projectiles for all hunting . I tried some of the monolithic bullets we will have to use in my Browning A-Bolt 308 and the bullets tumbled. I bet our old Winchesters won’t like them either.

I can for sure say that my Hawken won't adapt well to such silliness.

It's not just the legacy calibers. Those of us who are handloading and have had a decent stock of say, .357mag, 40s&w, 10mm, 45acp or 45 Colt components are still shooting good ammo for at or near single digits per rd. Also, my stock of components for 30-30, .308 and 30-06 still let me shoot for under a quarter per rd as well. Heck, I've still got components for 1,800rds of 55grn 5.56 NATO which will cost me a mere 8.1 cents per round.
