50-110 Load Data (with actual usable info)

Post by butlerj »

I've done a lot of searching for load data for 50-110, and the results tend to be pages and pages of either, "me too" or "You don't want that, because (insert cartridge) is way better!" This isn't a "Me too!" or a "Everyone should use the same cartridges I do because I'm old and have strong opinions." thread. I wrote to Hodgdon and got the official data. Now I'm posting it publicly, so others can find if they need it. It doesn't look like they included the modern hot rod elephant killer loadings, but it's at least a starting point. Without further delay, here is the official loading data for 50-110!

Hodgdon does not have a test barrel for this cartridge. This data was given to us when we purchased Accurate powders.

I ran into a lot of the same recently. People either telling me "That thing is gonna hurt you" or "You can't make up mild loads for that cartridge" etc. My foray into reloading for my .50-140 has been extremely slow, and I'm not a patient guy. Don't think it's ever taken me quite as long to get shots fired downrange with any new rifle before?
I appreciate your posting the data you found, and hope it helps others who might have the same cartridge in a rifle, and looking for info.
I'm starting out with reduced BP loads, using filler over powder to eliminate dead air space. But at sometime down the road I'd like to see if it's possible to also shoot some light smokeless loads in my .50-140 cases also. My Ballistics program has loads for the .500 Nitro Express, which is close to my .50-140, so I'll likely start there, and work up some smokeless to try it later.

Big Bore Rifles and Cartridges, 1991 Wolfe Publishing has a complete chapter on the 50-110. It has both black and smokeless loading information. Runs about $15.00 used and $25.00 new on the net.

In case you are not aware, Hodgdon list some smokeless loads for the 50/140 in their online reloading data. They tested it to 28K psi max, but it still packs quite a punch.

I've seen their data and it's all too fast for my interest. I want to shoot BP, and my reduced loads with amaranth seed filler are very mild, and enjoyable to shoot. So for my Sharps I'll stick with BP loads.
