Citori Hunter – Before & After Stock Refinish, Part 2

Post by Old No7 »

Here's an update to the "Citori Hunter – Before & After Stock Refinish" (click for link) posting that I'd started and stopped a few weeks ago...

I used Birchwood Casey’s Stock Sealer & Filler to fill all the pores of the stock. I put it on right over 5 coats of their Genuine Oil (low gloss) which covered the stain. Doing it that way, when I lightly sanded down the filler with gray Scotch pads, the edges didn’t lose any color — that's a tip that a local gunsmith shared with me.

The sealer/filler smelled just like "good 'ol model glue" -- it was like taking a trip back to the early 70’s! (I wasn't a druggie, but my brothers and I sure built a lot of plastic models...) Anyhow, it went on like maple syrup, but dried very fast in just 1 hour. I put on 3 coats of that and smoothed each coat in-between, and then finally I put on 2 more hand-rubbed coats of the oil. Sure, I could have been a tad more fussy, but it’s fine for what I’ll use it for and I won't worry about any "white scratches" which Browning's original finish are famous for getting. I also ground down a new Pachmayr recoil pad, and added the custom leather comb pad (from ebay -- I now have 3 of those, they work well and look great), which easily attaches with Velcro and puts my cheek in just the right place, so I’m looking straight down the rib.

I could have been more fussy, but for what I'll use it for I am satisfied with the refinish of this, and now I just need to take her out into the woods & fields and bag some birds.

That turned out great. Thanks for the lesson. I have a Marlin 90 that needs some finish work.
