Elk Hunt

Post by jkbrea »

I was so fortunate my middle son got to come out and elk hunt with me this year.
We hunted really hard putting in about 6-8 miles a day, some in really steep lung busting terrain. After a few days we took a break and went antelope hunting in Pinedale. That was a fun hunt. A UTV sure makes it easy. We saw lots of speed goats and took a doe at 200 yards. On the way out it was snowing and thundering!
We had one more hunt day. He wanted to go to an area we heard bugling at prior. Right when we got there and set up, we only had to wait 10 min and a small bull came walking in about 60 yards away. Down it went! Rem 700 in .308 using Hornady Precision Hunter 178 grain. It went in small and came out big. Ruined a little meat but...less to pack out. Packing out elk sucks! Weather has been beautiful with fall colors. All in all....a great week with my son. And...I still have a cow tag left, but need a few fays to rest up.

Congratulations! What's most important is being able to spend time with your kids. They drift away all too quickly.

Glad to hear your son's visit was also a successful hunt. I could see you were excited when we were there. The old .308 is a great cartridge. I've had them forever.
We went through Pinedale on the way back. Cool place. We saw dozens of trucks and horse trailers of people hunting when we were driving.
Beautiful country you live in. The boys and I would like to go back at some point.
Take care.

I don't have a .308, but do have a .30-06, and there is hardly any real difference in the two. Both are still capable of taking anything native to North America. Accuracy and enough power to do the job has always been the calling card of the .30-06 and .308 cartridges.

Yeah. Normally I use my 30-06 for everything, or 45-70 if bears are around. I run the gub club here and by far, the most popular caliber for hunters is a 300 win mag....with a huge muzzle break and a huge high power scopes. Nice rifles but here most of the terrain is heavily wooded so most shots are 50-200 yards. The shorter barrel better in the woods Except speed goats...those are long shots on the prairie. But to each his own.

And OldWin....I'll be looking forward to you and your boys coming out!

For those of you who go through Pinedale, if you dont stop at the Museum of the Mountain Man, you are missing out .

Just a few more pics. Really beautiful out here. I'm all recovered from packing that bull elk  . Now I have an elk cow tag and my wife has a buck antelope tag!
If any forum member ever draws a tag out my way, I'd be glad to help you out.

It IS beautiful there. And Ive seen (and live) in some beautiful country.

I will certainly vouch for this gentleman's offer. He genuinely welcomed my sons and I like old friends, and didn't know us from Adam
First class dude. OldWin don't forget.

Glad your fall has been going well, my friend!

Nicely done!

Elk hunting is always exciting right up until you drop one. Then the dread of getting them out sets in, and you know the work has just begun! Makes for a very long day after the shot!
