Model 94 carrier

Post by ldpfeifer »

I have a 94 in 32 special that is allowing the cartridges to slip past the carrier. Does anyone know if the 30-30 and the 32 special carriers are interchangeable? Or?
Thanks in advance.

They are interchangeable, but..I...
When you say "slip past the carrier", do you mean come out of the magazine UNDER the carrier when the carrier moves up?
If so, this sounds more like a worn cartridge stop.

Then my guess is a worn cartridge stop. This is on the lower link and is a small hump that stops the next cartridge in the magazine from coming out. It is timed so that as the link drops and rotates, the hump rolls into position in front of the magazine. When the action is closed, it rotates out of the way. Usually, a "pop" can be heard as it releases the next cartridge out onto the carrier under pressure from the magazine spring.
You can swap in another lower link, or build up the original with weld and reshape it.
That is why there is a small slot cut in the front of the carrier. To make room for the cartridge stop when the carrier is in the lowered position.

Old Win has it right! Not a hard job. With the action closed and the carrier lowered, the cartridge stop is covered and the rifle can be loaded with the last cartridge sitting on the carrier. As the action is opened, the link lowers and the stop is angled back slightly, but if it isn't high enough, as the carrier is raised at the end of the opening stroke, it allows a 2nd cartridge to slip under the carrier. The links for the .30-30 class of cartridges are the same (25-35, 30-30, 32-40, 32WS & 38-55, even the 375 Win), and use the same height stop, as they have the same rim diameter. The only differences will be how the link attaches to the frame, a cross pin with retaining screw thru the bottom of the line, or a screw from left to right thru the link, (Post '64 thru early AE models). The pistol cartridges are different, usually having smaller rims. With the .357 having the tallest stops. I don't know how tall the stop needs to be.

Thank you Griff.
I also think the reason this is an issue on some rifles, while some never bother, is the location of the hole in the lower link. If the hole is on the high side of the tolerance (closer to the cartridge stop), it in effect makes the cartridge stop lower. In some cases it takes little wear to make it too low, allowing cartridges to slip over.
This seems more prevalent on post 64 examples, but is still rare. When I examine one, I look that the lower link doesn't sit below the bottom of the receiver at the front, where the pin or screw is. This is an indication of that condition.
