Shooting an "Early 1500s Matchlock"

Post by Old No7 »

My twin brother is as sick on all manner of blackpowder firearms, as I am on leverguns and top-break revolvers.

He just bought this replica of an Early 1500s Matchlock; it is stocked in cherry, handles well with a 24" .58 caliber bore -- and the "button" to the left of the serpentine is the trigger.

Here's 2 images of it:

And we'll see if this link works for you (works OK for me when I preview it) -- it's a really short video of him showing someone who wanted to try it. Notice HOW FAST the ignition is -- He tells me that Matchlocks have been clocked as being faster than flintlocks.

Your "sick on black powder" brother is Paul, right, and you are Mark?
I love the old stuff, too, and used to chat with your brother on a site called Frontier Folk. I hope he is well. I recall that he lost his wife and took it hard.
People who haven't seen one are indeed amazed at how fast the ignition is on a well-built matchlock. Do you know who the builder of your brother's gun is? There was a gent named Leonard Day who built some wonderful arms from the matchlock period.

Oh... I NEED one. I don't have a matchlock ignition in my collection.

That looks really neat.
You don't see many hunting with one. It would be a fair achievement I think.

Actually, I do know Paul. I used to live near him 11 years ago, until we moved south. You're right, he was into the old stuff like my twin is too.

Small world...
