OT - Extreme Marksmen show on Hist Channel

Post by Rimfire McNutjob »

There was a two hour show called Extreme Marksmen on the History Channel this evening from 9-11pm. I didn't catch it all as the Penguins were struggling against a Redwings onslaught in the third period. However, it replays at 1am Eastern again on the History Channel if you've got a recorder.
... I love poetry, long walks on the beach, and poking dead things with a stick.

I saw this show. As usual with the History channel, they have the funding to do a real good job and do for the most part. The added drama ruins it for me . The segment with the Army snipers shows just how difficult a cold bore shot at long range can be but the guys they showed are not the only ones capable of doing it, as the show would suggest.

Look to the Marine, Army and Canadian snipers overseas right now.

I saw this part - it was pretty cool. Except they said the bullet was a 45 caliber, which in history, was never chambered in a levergun - to do the stunt correctly shouldn't it been a 44 wcf?

That's what I was hoping for. Would have been neat to see an old Sharps shooting that far.

The Army sniper segment got dragged out too long, and I wound up changing the channel and not watching much of the second half.

They said it was in 45 Colt also ... but did you see the round he showed? It looked like a giant CB Cap. A sort of stumpy conical looking bullet. I'm wondering if it's something special used by the trick shooters.

IIRC, he mentioned it was 160 or 165 grains... much lighter than the average .45 cal bullet. Probably a light, low recoil, accurate bullet for shows.

Yeah, I saw it. I thought it was pretty good. On the snipers segment, they said they were shooting a Remington model ? using .33cal ammo. I'm not familiar with either one, can somebody give me more info. Would that possibly be a .338 Lapua or variant?

I would have like to have seen a duel between Byron Ferguson with his longbow and Bob Oglesby, both shooting at the hangmans noose. I bet Byron Ferguson would win hands down.

Looked up .338 ammo at Midway, and .338 Lapua Magnum is the only one that comes in a match load, so I assume .338 Lapua is what his rifle was chambered in. Was a bit suprised when they said .33 cal, I assumed it would be something like .300 Win Mag.

Nope, those were 165 gr. 45lc's. Lot of CAS shooters use them to beat the recoil in these revolvers. (Yeah, I know, but it's relative thing )
To cut the hangman's rope he had to change to a SWC. That 165 short RNFP wasn't getting the job done.

Yep, that was the other giveaway. Win never chambered the 92 in 45lc. That and the front sight on the barrel band and more suttle, the shape of the receiver.

I didn't see the show, but the 338 Lapua has been gaining ground with some of the snipers. Has way more range than the 308 and much less blast than the 50cal. The most popular bullet is the 250gr Scenar (sp?) and there is an armor piercing bullets that WAY out performs any 30cal going.

The rifles weigh no (or very little) more than std issue sniper rifles and that's a big plus.

At the end of the show, Tom Knapp is shooting at an assorted group of targets with what looks like a Henry rifle chambered in .22. Did anybody see that and can you identify the maker of that rifle?

If it's a repo, I'd like to get one someday.

I saw that too but I think it may have been a 66 with the forewood removed ala Hollywood style. The reason I say this is I got a glimpse of a loading gate on the right side of that brass frame. Uberti did make some 22lr 66's.

AndyM, don't forget the Winchester 1876 was chambered in .45-60, as well as .45-75, so technically, a lever WAS chambered in .45. Just my 2 cents, jd45
