First handloads w/ the .45 Cowboy Special

Post by 2ndovc »

I'd mentioned in one of Scott's Bulldog threads that his posts had renewed my interests in the .45 Colt. Not that they were being completely ignored, but I'd spent a lot of time with the .455 Webleys and .44 Magnum this summer.
I bought some .45 Cowboy Special brass from Starline recently and loaded a few different rounds this morning. Bullet selection was kind of random, just a few of each in almost empty boxes except the 200 gr LPF that has performed well in my other .45s.
I have two sets of .45 dies on tool heads for my Dillon, one Dillon set that I use for .45 ACP and one Hornady set I have for the .45 Colt.
Since the Dillon expands with the powder die, I had a spare expander die from the Hornady set that I put in my old Hollywood single stage press and left the others in the Dillon. Sized and primed with the Dillon, move the case to the single stage to expand. Powder via the RCBS electric and back to the Dillon to seat and crimp the bullets. Two of the bullets are .45 Auto style so those got a good taper crimp. The 200 LFP has a good crimp groove and got a solid roll crimp.
Sounds tedious, but wasn't all that bad. Something to do on a snowy day.

Right to left;
.45 ACP, .45 Auto Rim, .45 CS w/ 185 gr Berry's Plated FP, .45 CS w/ 230 gr. TC, .45 CS w/ 200 gr LFP and a good old .45 Colt.
All over 5 grains of Bullseye.

I'm going to try and hit an indoor range this week, as much as I'd rather shoot outdoors but we got another 6" of snow today.

Jason,

I load a LOT of C45S on my Dillon 550C, (a result of wearing out my 55B and being replaced by Dillon with their "no BS warranty; a shameless plug_); along with 45 Colt and 45ACP. I have dedicated heads for each of them. And recently (a couple of years ago), added a 3rd using another carbide 45 Colt sizer, a 3rd 45 expander, and a seating/crimp die for the 45ACP that provides a roll crimp. =https://www.rcbs.com/dies-and-shell-ho ... CBS #18942.

Another thing, if you're loading for a Colt SAA or clone, be advised that IMO, full power ACP load levels are too snappy for them. A Ruger Blackhawk or similar framed gun, I wouldn't have an issue with. I load 3.4 grains of Clays which is about 2 tenths below Hodgdon's minimum for my lead cowboy action loads, and 3.8 grains as my maximum, which will be as devastating as anything quicker... Hodgdon lists 4.3 as it's maximum 45ACP load for 200 grain bullets, but that is listed as 17,000 CUP... Although, I like the numbers for CFE pistol with a jacketed 200 grain... Minimum listed at 6.3 grains for 877 fps @ 14,900 PSI, which is about max I'll go in my Colt SAAs... I have a pound of it I got a little over a year ago for testing, but... haven't gotten around to doing so. I wanna try some in my 1873 & Henry at slightly higher velocities for hunting pigs... sooner or later I'll get around to it!

Thanks for the info, Griff!

I figured these would be a little on the hot side, but this batch is strictly Ruger only. I have a LOT of Bullseye and thought my favorite .45 ACP load would be a good place to start. I'll back it down a bit as I play with it and see how it performs.
I'll end up getting another die set/ tool head for the Dillon eventually, I still need to get a couple for the 10mm and .40 S&W.

I'll get to the range soon. Not a big fan of the indoor range near by. Too many weirdos, but really want to get some shooting in.

I have a 550 setup in 10mm/.40 S&W. Toolhead. Dillon Dies. Shellplate and buttons.

If you want to do some trading, I can hook you up!
