That's a great idea Gunny! Ole Six can host the party! Now THAT would be fun.
I've never owned an 88. I do, however, have a friend over on the next street who has a carbine in .284.
I will get my coat and go get it for you.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Thank bud, I'd appreciate it.
Off today too, might go hit the woods again this afternoon. But right now im watching The Battle of Britain. Like all movies there are some inconsistencies- like the DeHavilian Mosquito dressed in German markings. Ah well what the public dont know won't hurt em right.
The 284 is one of those calibers that has always tickled my fancy. I should have built my 600 Mohawk as a 284 but I was more in need of a varmint rifle so it became a 22-250.

Glad you got the day off buddy. Now get in the woods!
I have no experience with most of those cartridges. I was out of school and working before I owned anything but a 30-30. Even when I started buying guns, it was always old stuff. I did have a .308 I bought in 1989.
I never owned a 30-06 till 2003.
At my house, the 30-30 has always been a high powered rifle.
My son packs one 95% of the time in Alaska too. We can't be alone, I haven't seen one box of 30-30 in a store in over a year.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Well, an 88, bought one new in 1991, 73 manufacture. It is a .308. Will put Federal 150s into 1/2” but Win Round Nose 180s go about 4 1/2”. Shot a deer at 275 yds with an early production one in .243 with the 85 gr copper ammo, chronos about 3200.

Just used a gift card, new ground blind on the way!
Another half hour of Battle of Britain, then I think I might go move my existing blind at the club and see about an afternoon sit. I have a craving for jerky!

I bought a new blind this year too. Opened it on the lawn and left it for a week or so to air out. Put it up to the lot, and not one person sat in it all season haha.
The one my dad sits in we have had 20 years. I can't believe it's still in one piece. We did have to repair a zipper this year for the first time.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Yeah, they don't mind charging for the blinds even though most don't last but a few years! The one I have is 6 or 8 years old and it's getting tired, holes in the roof, zippers not work so well anymore. So I figured why not use a gift card to off set my out of pocket!

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Yup.
I know even if I buy one just like the old one, it won't last a third as long..... for twice the money.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Yup, exactly why I buy cheaper blinds and try to use someone else's money!
Just got home from moving my blind. I decided to move it open/expanded instead of breaking it down. When I set it up last month the pockets that the support rods go into were starting to tear. Thought if I took them out and reinstalled they might tear off completely, leaving me up a stump. Thankfully I moved it from 1 field edge to another. Walk 100 steps, put it down & go back for my chair. Then take the chair 100 past the blind and go back. Well I got my 'steps' in for today!

Wait now what did I miss?
Well I've been feeling like a dead carp all day. Achey, mild fever, slight runny nose and a sinus headache. JUST FRICKING GREAT! I normally get a sinus infection in the winter, im really hoping that's what I have...but the guys I work with have a cough, one has a headache.
I was supposed to go to the neighbors for a Christmas toddy tonight , let them know and they brought me a test kit. Ill do that in the morning. Neighbor says she has a doc that will prescribe ivermection over the phone so thats a plus.
Wish me luck!!

And yet, the NICE people, well.......they still have to provoke and get their little digs in.

Haha yeah I read what you wrote. Priceless.
We did that with the small trees too!
We used to go down to the woods nearby (my dad and his buds played there when they were kids. We 7sed their old foxholes) and played army. We dressed up in WW2 surplus gear and had BB gun fights. It was mostly guerrilla and ambush tactics, and quite vicious in its combat. I have a beautiful German helmet with all the insignia, liner, and chinstrap sitting in my gunroom. It's worth good money now, but I remember us wearing it on our "combat missions" many years ago. Luckily nothing happened to it.

I still cannot imagine spending $5-800 dollars on 15-20 imported Italian junk handguns and thinking your being nostalgic...then you go to sell them after shooting a couple of cylinders,....all sloppy.....and getting a return of 3 cents on the dollar....

Looks like a boom of logs going across Moosehead lake.
Before the the steam and diesel Boom Jumpers, they took an anchor forward with a rowboat and dropped it. The rope ran back to a barge that hauled the boomed logs with a capstan that wound up the anchor rope.
I bet them boys were pretty scrappy.

In the stories I read I never heard of a logger who was over 30 y.o......tough life
Yes, but Calvin Coolidge lived in a time when men were men and said it like it was. Today we have people who make stuff up and your always on the defense.
In the world today, the bum is given the benefit of the doubt....the losers, the ones who put in false medical claims, the criminals, the deceivers, the ones who eat more than their share when the rest of the world is starving.....I saw it all at work.....the one guy who caused more grief to everyone combined died a week or two ago.....and was quickly forgotten......62 y.o....a true narcissist....Pagen wannabe ........I told him 20 years ago that when he died there would only be one person at his funeral..his daughter who has learning disabilities.....and that's almost exactly how it turned out.
Was not any services...he died and went straight to the furnace......good riddance.....whenever a former co worker died I'd get 10 phone calls......this one..none.....wife read it on Facebook.....
Lets talk unfired Civil War cap and balls......this one never saw service as the war ended just as the lot was manufactured and sold as scrap to Bannermans around 1900. Talk about robust! This thing weighs close to twice what a Colt weighs.

That is some pistol there. Largest one I ever fired was one of those Phillips SA 45-70s. Weighed in at 6 lbs.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Some 30 years ago i knew a guy who shot nothing but 45-70 revolvers...might have been one like the one you shot.....I used to get my brass from him as he only used factory ammo.....yea, he was wealthy and had a 30 gallon barrel full to the top of brass. He didn't like it when I told him I only wanted R-P brass......I did not argue his price but liked one brand.....
Still have some of it as I used to buy 300 at a time or something close to that number.....
It's 1...my son just returned our phone call about the fires in Colorado.....says they are 20 miles from him.....I can't help but think of all of the pets that no empathy people leave behind........as I sit here, my little Shih Tzu is licking my arm.

I am aware that whilst I was in the land of nod, cross words have been said, tut tut, be nice out there........not everyone has a sense of humor.
Concerning big handguns, I have always had the opinion that once a handgun weighs the same as a rifle throw it away and carry a rifle...

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
So I did an 'alternative ' treatment last night. Let me just say it took about an hour and a half. When I went to bed I still had a fever, body aches and headache. I was up twice overnight to hit the head. First time around midnight, still feverish. Second time at 3am, no fever! Slept until 6 and sure I still feel like I was hit by a truck but I dont feel sick! Can taste my snuff so thats great!
We had a guy for summer classes that was a big bore handgun guy, each summer he would redo one of his guns. Had some big single shot bolt action, if I remember right he made it a 416 of one flavor or another. He took each one to Africa each year.

Supposed to hit the range today with the oldest boy. Think my old man is going too. I think I can still get my truck in there. We will see.
Big handguns......
Nope, 44 magnum is about it for me. I can shoot and hit with a 44. Recoil is at least manageable and it is somewhat enjoyable to shoot. Once they aren't, I have no interest. Same with rifles. I've never owned a belted magnum. Probably never will. I just don't have any need or desire.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Its funny you say that OW, the 338 WM i built in school i took a page from all the trap guns of the world. Meaning I made the stock to have very little drop. That being said it recoils straight, not falling away to whack ya in the cheek. I'd shoot 50 rounds with less pain than 5 rounds from a Remington 700 in '06.
Yup I can taste coffee!

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Absolutely! Stock design plays a huge role. Gunny, you are a shooter, and obviously in the "know". With many people, however, it is tied up in their insecurities and ego. They have it so they can tell everyone. They can't shoot them effectively, because the recoil intimidates them, and they don't want to spend the money it cost to shoot them to be proficient with these rifles.
I have a friend at work who shoots the boomers all the time. He is a shooter and a fanatic moose hunter. He likes the big cannons and owns many. He can, and does shoot them all the time. These people a rarity, however.
I'm not too insecure to fully admit that I have no desire to shoot that stuff. I don't like the recoil. Same with handguns over 44 magnum.
I had a Ruger M77 International once that was the worse kicking thing I ever fired. It was awful. I swapped it for a model 70 featherweight in 30-06 that doesn't kick half as bad. For this reason I was nervous when I bought my Ruger GSR. I was concerned I would be like the old International. To my surprise, it was nothing like it. Very pleasant to shoot. No surprise I shoot it way better and way more too.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Yeah, the manufacturers have seen the light. The last 700 I had was an 06, it kicked the snot outta me. 338 is enough for anything in this country, why I put that 375 together I dont know but it pushes ya quite a bit. Sixer sent me some 270 gr cast bullets and those are fun to shoot! I need to shoot it more to find a load... but I really don't wanna!

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Haha yup.
My buddy at work likes 338 too. He has em all, and says the 338 is the best of them.
My kid is like me. Even on Kodiak, he uses 30-06 if he wants something "big". Most times, he just carries a
30-30 or a 6" model 629. Of course, he has Jack's 95 in 35WCF, but he is really careful of it cause it's quite minty.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Stock design certainly is important. Throughout the 90s I shot hunting rifles at the range about 40 weeks a year. I bought REM Mountain Rifles in 30-06 and 270. Light kickers compared to some other designs. 375 seemed to me like a shotgun type kick. Got a REM Classic in .280, east to shoot also. Watch this old guy shooting a .458 and realized your own technique plays a large role in recoil perception. The Ruger design is good for my style, have shot them up to .458.

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
I hope you guys will still welcome me here even though I represent "sinister malevolence"
I think Jim Taylor's post, Message for the New Year sums it up as far as I'm concerned. .

Whatever you do always give 100%........... unless you are donating blood.

Haha that's why I don't see what everyone's problem with our little corner is.
You'd think they'd all be happy that all the bad apples are in one barrel.
Well, I shot that unfired Detective Special today.
Man! That thing shoots really good. Glad I decided to start using it.

Hey! Birdman here.....Geeze Gunny....not much is worse than being sick...(you ought to see what 3 concussions will do to ya.)
I'm paranoid about getting sick.....another reason for staying home.....My in laws cancelled the big dinner for tomorrow......everyone is sick up there...even the kids.....I'm gonna miss the Italian wedding soup with Acini de Pepe!
I'm with Jay...nothing bigger than a 44 mag and even then I download them since I was about 50 to 1,000-1200....early flattop Ruger s will beat you up bad.
Well Gunny and GK..you guys missed a little action last night......the 600 pound twins tried to cause trouble so they could get this post deleted like the other ones.......I took Fred's advice and "let the log float by" As its a matter of time before it sinks...for good....hurry please.....
Birdman of Leverguns.....

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Old Savage has the '88 and Gamekeeper has the '87. I feel bad about you guys not receiving your gifts so I'll award you something......you guys fight it out....first gen Colt in 45 Long Colt and a Smith Triplelock Target 44 Spl.
Now, leave me alone......

The Mummers Parade was postponed for a day as its supposed to rain tomorrow.
Watched Reruns of Yellowstone and then turned the channel to the New Years thingy..... and I quickly turned the channel as there were enough of those on the screen to make a Tarzan movie....they are on stage dancing like they are having sex.....I'm no prude but this stupid jungle behavior is out of hand.
Here, just take em.....I have more to take their place.....-----006

Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
I shouldn’t have to straighten things out like this but Colts did not come in 45 Long Colt. Foreign SAs that Six so loves are some times marked 45 LC . I will happily take that Triple Lock.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
Re: Chairmen of the Politically Incorrect
Ok, I just finished cleaning that Detective Special.
I'm ready to rumble for the Colt and the Triple Lock.
Gunny is still a little sick so I may have a chance. OS will probably whoop me though.
