Bore sight recommendations
Been thinking of a bore sight to sight in my rifles with scopes. Any good recommendations? Hate wasting ammo just to sight in. We can hunt with straight wall cartridges now like my 44-40. Thanks

Re: Bore sight recommendations
Is the 44-40 considered a straight wall cartridge?

Re: Bore sight recommendations
I bore sight ARs by setting the upper on a support and aiming at a buoy ball 300 yards away and putting the sights on that spot.
with a bolt gun, same thing. with a lever gun, same thing, if the breach opens up the whole barrel.

Howdy,
I've been using a "Laserlyte" (MBS-DLUX) ....... Comes with inserts, etc, for .22 - .50, plus attachments
for shotguns......
I think they're around $65 ... Very happy with it.....

Re: Bore sight recommendations
Way back when it was super politically incorrect to have anything involving a "laser", I got a small laser sight that came with rings where you could put it on a one inch scope tube, and it had some inserts that would allow it to also be put on smaller diameter tubes, so you could put it directly on a rifle barrel.
All you need to do with an outfit like that is mount the laser sight (...TEMPORARILY...you don't have to worry about the extreme horror of having a laser sight on a levergun... )
1) use your Scope or regular sight from a rest to shoot a group, then
2) put the gun back in the rest with your scope or iron sights aimed at the point you aimed at when you shot the group. Then all you do is
3) turn the laser on, and adjust it so that the dot is where your bullet holes are. Your firearm is now sighted in for the laser sight. Then you simply
4) adjust your iron sights or scope until they are aimed at the same place the laser dot is.
Ideally it is best to shoot three shots or so for your group, and then of course after you've sighted in this way, shoot another group. However when ammunition is scarce, if you are comfortable with your abilities to shoot off of a rest, it really only takes one shot to side in and one shot to confirm.
I have found this method far more reliable than any of the various bore-sighters, plus I only needed to get the one device, without a bunch of different cartridge specific inserts and what-not.

Re: Bore sight recommendations
I peep down the bore if possible and center an object about 50 yards away and move my reticle to the center of said object. This will usually get you on paper at 100. With factory irons I don't bother and just shoot and adjust as needed as they should be reasonably close. If adding a peep I cowitness with the open rear before shooting.

Re: Bore sight recommendations
Any gun I can se through the bore without dismantling the gun, I do this way also. Most leverguns I don't do this with. All my single shot rifles get done this way though, as do my bolt guns.

marlins and winchester 92s and 94s are easy enough to remove the bolts . . .marlinman93 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 22, 2021 11:09 amAny gun I can se through the bore without dismantling the gun, I do this way also. Re: Bore sight recommendations
I do the same thing but put a target at 25 and 100. I look down the bore at a spot on the 25 yard target, and then the scope and adjust to the same spot. Most scopes are one click=.25", so about 16 clicks per inch at 25 yards. If you're dead on at 25 yards you'll be a few inches high at 100. Then just 4 clicks per inch. You can do the same eith an AR. Just remove the upper and bolt assembly.rossim92 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 22, 2021 5:22 amwow, never thought of that . I've watched several hunters at our gun range waste an entire box or more of ammo trying to get on paper at 100 yards when putting another target at 25 would have saved a lot of ammo and time.

Re: Bore sight recommendations
I have a BSA Bore Sight kit from Midway. It is inexpensive and gets the job done:

Re: Bore sight recommendations
I've always used pretty much the same technique using a dot or spot on the target. I've never had to use any commerical bore sighter.
Re: Bore sight recommendations
yeah, simple and easy. it's one of the things I like about my break action rifle and shotgun, wide open. easiest way to clean 'em too....
