Win '92 miss fire
My original Win. '92 just gave me a couple of miss fires after many rounds with no problem. A couole of times there was no clue of firing pin contact.
Fired okay on second try. One time there was the mearest hint of a firing pin contact on the primer.
The nose of the firing pint seems to portrude enought when the rear of the pin is pushed flush. Hammer force seems adequate.
Maybe I need more force on the hammer spring strain screw?
Anybody have other ideas for the miss fires?

Is there much play or looseness in your lever or bolt? The lever cams the firing pin backwards when the lever is first opened. If there was extra play or movement in the lever or bolt, it may not be clearing the firing pin to go all the way forward. Odd that it didnt even make a mark. I doubt that's a mainspring issue, tho I could be wrong. If it's that weak, you should be able to feel it. Do you have another similar gun to compare it to for hammer force?
Maybe Nate will show up and throw his thoughts in.

Let's hope. Are you sure the locking lugs were fully dogged? Bolt fully closed?Malamute wrote:Maybe Nate will show up and throw his thoughts in.
Have you disassembled it to inspect the bolt interior parts?

If you are sure the hammer has enough spring behind it, it's more likely the firing pin is broke in the middle where the top of the lever straddles it. This part of the pins is a long thin area that is prone to break. It hard to diagnose because the two half's are contained in the bolt and will only occasionally cause a misfire.
If you find there's nothing wrong with the firing pin the next place to look is the trigger/sear notch engagement. If you have a really light trigger as in the notch or trig nose is going away, and when you pull the trigger it doesn't move away from the hammer enough to clear the 1/4 cock notch and when it hits the 1/4 cock notch it slows the hammer just enough to cause a miss fire.

Well, the only things I'll write like I KNOW what I'm talking about are things I've experienced. I learned a new one, as I've only had the protrusion part of the firing pin break on any of mine... and it doesn't fire AT ALL when that breaks!Nate Kiowa Jones wrote:now I'm beginning to feel like Mighty Mouse!...

Win '92 miss fire
Thanks for the replies.
1) The Bolt does lock tightly.
2) Firing pin definitely does not seem broken (w/o dissassembl).
3) With a fired case in the chamber, and the firing pin against the indent
in the primer, the back of the firing pin protrudes at least .040"
On an older gun which has not had this problem yet. the rear of the
firing pin protrudes about .010".
4) The hammer seems heavy enough. Maybe better than anolder gun
that has not have this problem.
5) Sear engagement is light. However, can not get the hammer to drop
into the safety notch regardless how I operate the trigger.
Seems like that I have exhausted all of the reasons for the miss fires and can not find the cause.

Re: Win '92 miss fire
Could be any of those but the most common cause is usually the firing pin.meanc wrote:Could it maybe be a headspace issue? light hammer spring? Wrong primers?

It could still be broke in the middle.

If it's light and you don't need much pressure to drop the hammer the sear may not be moving far enough away from the 1/4 cock. It won't catch the trigger nose stopping the hammer but it can slow it down enough to cause miss fires.
