.357 Magnum Hunting... Being Laughed At :(

I was always somewhat reluctant to bring a 357 lever gun to the woods for deer.
I have Marlin's 1894 in 357 and 44 mag. But generally I'll hunt with a 30-30.
This year it will be 32 spl. and 33wcf. The Marlin 1894 is so light and handy in 357!
You really apricate a light rifle {carbine} when your lugging it all day!
I guess I just think you can get more range out of a rifle cartridge.

I and my son have killed a lot of critters with a 357 carbine. Everything from raccoon to whitetail to black bear. Its never disappointed me. My feeling is: If a compound bow will kill it, so will my 357 mag.

Couple years back, Glen Fryxell and I in Central Orygun chasing feral hogs; this one fell to a 180gr hard cast slug over a shot glass fulla 2400. Bullet hole shows plainly in the skull.

Another old thread come back to life! And a good one at that. Here is my .357 Pig Pak :

From this 20 inch Douglas barrel, my handloads were in the lower to mid 2000s depending on bullet weights from 125 to 158 grains.
My wife took a buck with a 140 grain bullet at 2400 fps. My first feral hog took a 125 grain bullet in the left eye (dim rainy day and the meager light reflected off that eye}.
A practical and fun combination! Several young shooters had their first centerfire experience with this rifle.

Take the time to learn where your gun shoots with the ammo you are going to hunt with. DO NOT sight your gun in on the bench!!!! My Win 94 shoots 2"+ to the left off sandbags vs hand held at 100 yards.

I've taken 225# deer with the .357. I've never recovered a bullet from a deer, they pass right through on a broadside shot.

Proper shot placement with ALL calibers is mandatory IMHO!

I have a rossi in .357 magnum, we can hunt deer with straight wall cartridges now in md. I might give it a whirl this year, As tcyer stated, any round you shoot is only as good as it's placement

Heck, I have done my share of handgun hunting with a .357 revolver. Kelly Brost killed a huge hog with a 4 inch model 28 Smith with a 180 gr Cast Performance WFN. Placement is the key and I think some people (including me) shoot a .357 or a .44 Special (my favorite) much better than they will ever shoot a .44 Mag or .454 Casull.
