Jug Test of 45 Colt+P in 16” Rossi 92

Post by Point452 »

I shot six water jugs with my Rossi 92 chambered in 45 Colt. I wanted to test the penetration and expansion of my hand load that pushes a powder coated, 255 Gr cast lead Lee bullet to 1500fps. While a relatively mild +P load, I think it will do nicely as a hunting load.

Interesting, I have some 360 gr loads that clock 1350 fps out of a 20" Rossi.

These Rossi’s are stout little rifles!

I have a 310gr load that I can push to 1620, but it starts to keyhole after 50-70 yds. My R92 seems to need a faster rifle twist to stabilize the heavier bullets.

I was relatively happy with the bullet’s performance, but I’d like to get a similar mold cut for a gas checked bullet.

Mine needs larger diameter bullets for the bore size for accuracy . Others have noted the same.

I'm a big fan of jug tests, thanks for posting. You may not need gas checks depending on the alloy, some alloys tolerate 1700fps, more or less.

Your load will work fine. I load the same bullet with Unique for my Marlin Cowboy. I've taken 6 or 8 Axis deer with it, all 1 shot each. And a turkey at about 80 yards. It is clay target accurate out to 110 yards!!
