Who knows about drones?

Post by Rusty »

I was watching the noon news here from Tampa where the main topic of conversation was the upcoming Superbowl. One of the things they were talking about was the air ban they were putting up over the area. They were very specific about the use of drones. For the next week there are to be no drones within a 25 mile radius of the stadium. 3 days prior to the game that will drop to 2 miles and on game day there will be a 1 mile ban.
My question is what gives with that? Are people just left up to their own honor to not fly anything or is there some way the Gov't can track those little things dancing around the skies?

It seems like the distances and restrictions are backwards though. I would think that the closer to the event the further the radius would be.

I might have gotten that part wrong but I just don't understand how they regulate them.

I believe anyone that owns a drone is supposed to register it with the FAA, stay under 300' AGL.
I've been thinking about getting one that can lock on to me, I'd really like to see my dogs working as we pheasant hunt. A buddy of mine tried a gopro on his dog- said he was seasick in minutes of watching as the camera bounced around too much!

They can deploy drone guns these days. Cops at various international summits use them to protect airspace apparently. I dont know the tech involved, i assume they jam the signal. Possibly trace owners once they recover a downed one and check its details. https://www.droneshield.com/dronegun-tactical

Drones aren’t very hard to down. We had a neighbor that was a total nuisance with his. Reports to police and FAA fell on deaf ears. Requests to respect other privacy was met with hostility.

Fortunately for the neighborhood he lost two in a short time span and decided to give up looking in peoples yards and windows.

Like all radio controlled items, the civilian ones are limited to certain frequencies. Use of a jammer on those frequencies causes the drone to shut down and drop.

MacDill AFB is only about 6 or 7 miles from the stadium so I would think anything needed could be based from there if needed.

The folks running the Army's drones might be 5,000 miles away, or less than 10. I do not know where their computer centers are, and I don't care, but the people running the drones can easily be in a bomb proof computer center 5,000 miles away and still manuver (manouver for GameKeeper) the drones with precision that is better than anything under $500 can match with the operator watching from 30 feet away. Then there are the shoulder mounted E.M.P. weapons to fry your drones circuit boards. Yes, they are real.

I’m a licensed commercial drone pilot in Canada, and there are a number of systems integrated right into the FAA’s Air Traffic Control system. Drones have the same logal obligations in terms of licencing, flight restrictions, etc. as any manned aircraft. I saw a comment about perhaps shooting one down; VERY bad idea. there are more than a few people currently in prison for thinking that was a good idea; drones have the same protections as a Cessna 172 in flight; it’s VERY much against the law to shoot at’em.
There are several electronic systems available to law enforcement that can remotely take control of one and force it to the ground, and one of the biggest manufacturers in the world (DJI) equips almost all their aircraft with a type of transponder, allowing it to be “seen & tracked” by ATC & other aircraft. the machine I regularly fly for business will show up on radar the same way a B747 does, with all the same flt. info. I also see all aircraft similarly equipped on my controller. it’s gotten VERY high tech

Know of a guy working on the bay that had enforcement watching him with a drone, finally got tired of it hounding him and threw, and hit it with a clam...

Absolutely no need to shoot down a drone. Besides if you did the camera on board might catch it.

That is the idea behind one of the devices used to knock them down.

The Actress Hedy Lamarr patented a device in WWII to do that to the German Radio Controlled torpedoes. Because her ex-husband was a Nazi, the U.S. Navy refused to use it.

I fully agree. But there are other means to down drones that don't get you caught on camera shooting at it.
