New to me additions !

Post by 6pt-sika »

A friend brought a Marlin 444P in the shop that he wanted to part with the other day . I’d turned him on to the gun at another’s friends shop and he bought it right . I told him after he bought it if he wanted to sell it let me know , so he brought it in for me and we came to a deal . With the new BS gun laws in VA we both have to do paperwork so I decided to put something else on as well . We’ve had a decent Winchester 37 pre serial number 16 gauge in the shop for awhile so I made an offer and bought it as well .

I've never owned a 37 or a 444. My cousin hunted with us for years and used a 444. It is an excellent cartridge for my locale. As I recall, it was a good shooter too.
I've had 2 Marlin 45-70's. A 72' style 1895, and an 1881.

Nice looking stuff.

Years ago one of my mom's real estate clients offered to sell me a set of four Model 37s for what was probably a decent price at the time. I passed but I probably should have bought them and stuck them in the closet for the heck of it.

That .444 looks pretty sharp, bet it's got a bit of a kick too. I know my .450 Marlin does. :D

I dunno I didn’t measure it yet :o Bit I will tommorrow. I would assume it’s 28 but it could be 30 . That’s the second 37 I’ve owned the other was a 410 .

That’s the 34th or 35th 444 in a Marlin I’ve owned and the third 444P . First Marlin I ever bought was an 1895M (450) , bought it to bear hunt the Poconos the year it first hit the gun mags . Had an 1895M , 1895MR and an 1895XLR all in 450 killed deer with all except the blues MR . I had an excellent handload using the now defunct Nosler 300 Partition . I used the Hornady rubber tipped factory stuff in the XLR version . But to be honest even with my stout overweight cast bullets pushed hard a 444 is not bad recoilwise .

Guy I knew picked up a like new 37 at a gunshow- cheap! He proceeded to put choke tubes in, ported the barrel, ran the forcing cone out. It was a learning experience as we were in gummsmiff skool. Anyhow he neglected to put a recoil pad on it. He tried some 3" - as we called em Duck &Dinosaur loads. It did well up until the 3&1/2" goose loads & buckshot. Then the forearm decided it wasn't cut out for that much abuse!

At one point I had over 100 Marlins starting in the 1890’s on up to modern stuff and I’ve probably owned 130-140 total but at the moment I only have four all 444’s and after getting this 444P two of them might hit the road . Well that is if I can find a used Monte carlo stock to put on this one . This is the third 444P I’ve owned and a 444P was the first 444 I ever purchased as well as the third Marlin I ever purchased !!!! 1895M (450) first , 1895CB (45-70) second and the 444P third .

Wow! That's a lot of Marlins buddy! I have a few, maybe around 6. The newest is the second issue 95.
Just thinking of it, but I've shot the biggest buck and biggest doe I've ever shot with a Marlin. The same Marlin.
Built a custom trapper from a 1948 336 back in about 1993. Did one identical for my dad from a 1950 mfd. example.
I shot a 216lb 8pt last year. Beating my previous record by one pound.
I shot a 140lb doe with it in 1994. Beating my previous doe by 5lbs.
Marlin has made some good stuff over the years. I started with Winchesters so that has always been my default.
