Most entertaining movies no one has seen

I just paused my older brother's favorite motion picture that happens to be among the most entertaining that no one has seen. "Jake Speed" is a mid-80s tongue-in-cheek parody of the James Bond genre — except James Bond is a "Mr. Every Man" of a sort. I don't want to get into the meat of the story much beyond Jake Speed being the title character of a book series (in the movie). The heroine asks Jake how he met his sidekick. He looks at her with a wry smile and replies, "Volume One." And then the two of them visit the Monaco Bar & Grill. Enough written.

When I remembered that "Jake Speed" was panned by paid critics, I also realize that I may be the only person on the forum who has seen it. So I'm passing on my highly favorable rating. There are probably many motion pictures from the first talkies through perhaps the 1990s that are as highly entertaining as they are unknown to me.

Please let me know a little about such movies that you find similarly entertaining yet nearly unknown.

If you are a Beatles fan, watch the movie "Yesterday". My wife and I just saw it last night and she was surprised how emotional I got. I've been a musician, band geek and have loved the Beatles since I was a kid. The story is about a young guy gets hit by a bus and wakes up in a world that's never heard of the Beatles. Not giving anything away, but we shouldn't have had to live in a world without John Lennon.

Another good one that not many people have seen is "Too Late the Hero" With Cliff Robertson and Michael Cain. WWII Pacific Theatre.

I agree with the call on “Yesterday”
When I saw it at the cinema it was amazing how the audience reacted to the main character trying to remember the words to Elanor Rigby. People were actually calling out the lyrics and correcting him.
Great movie.

Now my recommendation is “Babettes Fiest”
Wired movie about bringing a community together with a huge meal.
Beware though, it is Danish I think and is subtitled.

One movie that I have always liked is A Midnight Clear from 1992. It is set during WWII at the beginning of The Battle of the Bulge. For what its worth, I recommend it.

This is a very L.D.S. movie despite the racy and incestuously inferred skinny dipping scene at the beginning of the p.g. version......the g. version omits this scene and omits some of russian's (boone's) swearing and is a little less bloody at the "crooked sky" climax.....

By "very L.D.S." I mean the writer and production and crew and locations and lead actor (peterson) are/were mormon.....the ancient and unique race of indians depicted were inspired by the "lamanites" of the b.o.m.

Peterson could have been quite the hollywood star of he'd wanted but he went on to different vocations after two more movies and portraying joe smith in a short l.d.s. proselytizing propaganda film.....

Jewel Branch went on to try to be another Tanya Tucker and did not quite make the grade.....

Brenda Venus who fills out her buckskins so well, shed them all together in future film work......unless you want an eyefull, have your content filter on when you search her images......

Anyway, despite the mormon undertones and the blatant dicken's "tale of two cities" theme this is a great film that will make you sit on the edge of your sofa in suspense.....

I went to the movie house in town about 1972 I think to see a movie called ALASKAN SAFARI. It's hard to even find any reference to it now. The one movie I saw by that name says it was about a beat hunt but I seem to remember them shooting other game
me as well.
In one scene some guy assumed a sitting position where he was going to make an uphill shot on something using a pretty stout round. IIRC it was one of the Weatherby rounds and when he touched it off it sent him ankles over teakettle down the hill.
The scenery was beautiful to a kid that had never seen anything like that before.

Ang Lee's "Eat Drink Man Woman." A widowed master chef in Taipei who is trying to raise his three daughters is called out of retirement to save the menu at the governor's banquet. Each daughter's story resolves unexpectedly. There is so much in this film that you forget you are reading subtitles in the first five minutes.

Some replies focus on well recognized movies. Let's take care that movies are both entertaining AND obscure.

Here is one of the biggest box office movies of 1938. Until I downloaded it, I had never heard of it. But the price was "right" and how bad could a movie be whose star was Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.? Keep in mind that in 1938 the United States was deeply in the depression — that is, FDR's programs were failures. It took World War II and the country becoming the "Arsenal of Democracy" to restore prosperity.

So "The Young in Heart" is a feel-good drama with comedy.

One of my all time favorites! Actually got Bubbles to sit and watch it with me. She was quite taken with Mr. Caine and his blonde locks. Had to explain the history of the time and what was going on. I'll always be a big fan of the Martini rifle because of that movie.

Another good one is "Ravenous". A small detachment of soldiers in Quebec, post Mexican- American war begin to turn on one another. Some pretty good acting and wild story.

"The Cross of Iron" is another good WWII movie that I haven't seen in forever and "Lucky Lady" with Burt Reynolds and Gene Hackman if you like boats and Bootlegging.

"Islands in the Stream" with George C. Scott. Hemmingway story, I believe. Boats, guns and smuggling.

My #1 non western is "Murphy's War" starring Peter O'Toole. It's the end of WW2 and a German U-Boat crew is celebrating but Murphy is Hell bent on revenge. He isn't done . Great Movie.

Three more from the 1930s I had no knowledge of. I obtained these movies because Alastair Sim was the star — in fact the co-star. In Great Britain was either a radio show or book series whose title character was "Inspector Hornleigh" of Scotland Yard. There was a three-film series of Hornleigh movies titled "Inspector Hornleigh" (1938), then "Inspector Hornleigh on Holiday" (1939), and lastly "Inspector Hornleigh Goes to It" (1939). Their star was Gordon Harker a comedic character actor. The final movie, pertaining to World War II, was the most entertaining for me. This comedic mystery series was successful. It ceased when Alastair Sim did not want to be type-cast to his character or character type.

I loved "The Wind and The Lion" until 9/11. Now I can't stand the sight of a Mohammedan even if it is Sean Connery. However, Brian Keith made a great Teddy Roosevelt and

I agree!!
Love the part with Col. Richard Meinertzhagen. Peter Capstic wrote a great book about him that I read years ago. I saw his knobkerrie in the Fusliers museum at The Tower of London when I was there. That guy had some Big ones!

Here're a couple, one not too old, one from the 1930s.

"Last of the Blonde Bombshells" (TV movie 2000) is charming nostalgia combining Britain during the war and [current day] blending that time with a grandchild's eagerness to know. Dame Judi Dench and Ian Holm star — along with Big Band Swing music, plus the Bombshells' "last set" featuring the remarkable vocals of a nearly 70-year-old Cleo Laine.

"Q Planes" aka "Clouds Over Europe" (1939) is a droll comedy starring Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir Ralph Richardson. It would be a thriller about spying and sabotage on a planetary scale if I could take it seriously. But I cannot. What makes this movie work is its first-class dialogue.

Second Hand Lions

Michael Caine was never better. And Robert Duvall in the tavern fight scene is as good as any of his scenes in Lonesome Dove or Open Range.

A friend recommended it to me saying there was a scene that reminded him of something my brothers and I might do. The scene in the pond, won't say more.

Good for anyone in the family.

Sitting around being a bum this morning came across an old Audie Murphy movie; "Arizona Rangers". He sure was a tough little guy! It's about Quantrill and his Raiders which was the most interesting part for me. My Great Great Grandfather was a sergeant in the Second Ohio Volunteer Cavalry and sent out west to chase Quantrill. Not the greatest movie but lots of sixguns and horses.

A movie I enjoyed back in 1966 was "The Trap" starring Oliver Reed and Rita Tusingham, it's about a Canadian trapper who buys himself a wife, a Peabody rifle is used in the movie, I can't think of another movie featuring a Peabody Carbine.

Here are three gems starring Dick Powell. Each is unique and compelling. And you'll be pleased that none is a musical.

"Cornered" (1945) co-stars Walter Slezak. Powell portrays a discharged Canadian flyer obsessed to hunt down the war criminal responsible for his French wife and member of the Resistance's (not the absurd 2016–date pseudo-American version) murder. In a twisted way I am reminded of Vice Lombardi-era Packers on a power sweep.

"To the Ends of the Earth" (1948) co-stars Signe Hasso. Powell portrays the supervising narcotics agent of the California Bay area in 1935. Based on true incident, Powell begins by attempting to get prosecution for ship's officer responsible for murdering 100 people (". . . maybe 90; maybe 110. Sometimes you count using your pulse.") Plot metamorphoses into a planetary search for a drug kingpin. I guarantee you'll find the ending as unexpected as it is compelling.

"The Tall Target" (1950) co-stars Paula Raymond. This thriller is a docudrama of the swearing in of Abraham Lincoln in 1861. Powell portrays a fired New York City police detective, or did he quit?, named John Kennedy who attempts to prevent Lincoln's assassination.

Just thought of another one, " A Guy Named Joe" with Spencer Tracy and Van Johnson. It was remade by Steven Spielberg as "Always" with Holly Hunter and Richard Dryfuss. If you like vintage aircraft, they both are pretty decent movies.
