That's a trophy!

I love mine, 1954 vintage. One of my favorite ,22s. Our Boys like to try and outshoot me with their scoped 10/22 and Savage MKII and I always smoke them with my Lyman sighted 39A. :D

I have one just like it I put a carry handle on mine because the thing is just so accurate. I have a Skinner sight for it too, thinking of changing it out and putting the Skinner on it just because it would look better.

Wow, nice! Hope I look as good at 70!

The last few 39s I've seen for sale were well over $800 or 900 each!

There's still a few around for $600 or less, but you really have to luck into one.

Have you had any issues with it? My dad bought one for my sister and kept it for the 20 years she was working outside of the US.
I couldn't get more than 20-25 rounds through it before it would start to hang up on every other round or so. A good cleaning would fix it but it would go right back to not working properly every time. I hesitated on buying my 39A because of it but I'm glad I bought it. The '54 vintage rifle has been nothing but reliable.

JB,

I have a few issues with it. Mine seem to be related to the internals, which show high wear. I don't even remember what the problems were, haven't seen it in a while. One of the screws that fix the working parts backs out and things get too loose. I am leery of trying to "fix" it because I have history with "fixes" that result in permanent disabilities and a one way bubble test with Davey J . . . When I move and get to use it again I may use blue loctite to try to hold the parts in close formation and see if that helps.

So like my Spaniel I compensate and baby the lever and no rapid fire, that's what the dash15 is for, right?

Also, I use large jars of mixed ammo, which precludes finding the "load he likes"...

OTOH, I bought my wife a Winchester lever 22 and it spits bullets out every which-a-way, for both of us. It is in showroom condition but I prefer my old gun because it is satisfying to plink with...

Didn't make a difference how fast or slow I would work the action, just wouldn't work after a few rounds. My sister moved back to the States a few years ago and we sent to a dealer in AZ for her. I doubt she'll ever shoot, but at least she has it if she needs it.

Now THAT is a purty gun....!

I'm actually NOT a big Marlin 39A fan, because they are so large and 'ungainly' compared to the smaller and slicker Winchester, Henry, and Ruger ( ) 22 LR leverguns.

However, the 'classic lines' are great, and the craftsmanship is SO mid-20th-century and great....

I'm jealous....!!!!

Yeah Doc, those Ruger 96's are really pretty!

I wasn't a big fan of them until I picked up my 1954 vintage rifle. It's big for a .22lr but next to my Martini it's my favorite .22! :D

I had a 39A when I was a teen. After that I had a Mountie. Later I bought a Winchester 9422 in .22 mag when they first came out in the early 1970`s. That one got stolen along with a bunch more when my house got burlared in 2003. I still get mad every time it cross`s my mind. Once owned a marlin levermatic.

Agreed.....the Marlins win the 'looks' contest hands-down. The Rugers, ugly as they may be, do win the 'practical' contest for me though...

Just pokin' at you Doc! :D I do like the detachable magazine. Almost bagged one the .44 Magnum versions last year , but someone beat me to it.

Whenever I look at a Marlin 39a I realize why they don't sell that well in later years. They're so over built and such high quality that they just priced themselves out of a market full of cheap .22 rifles we've had the last 30 years or so.
There are few .22 rifles made that are as robust, and well made as these old 39a's were, and examples of 70 year old guns that still function, and shoot as well as the day they were new are not unusual. Finding one with nice exterior finish is unusual.

Nice looking rifle you have. I like the older Marlins without the caps on the end of the pistol grips.
