Easy. That's hitting close to home. :D
Size 12 here......you know what they say? :D
Seeing the John Kort post kinda reminded me I have to do some 44-40 work. Still have to try those bullets you sent me, buddy.
I've used Unique and 4227 in the 44. I will have to get some 5744 to try. I've never used it. I always used the 38, as it's just so much easier to get good results with.
Let me tell you boys something...Jay is right....I heard that many years ago....we had this guy at work who wore 14's sized boots and he was bragging....blah..blah.....we all said, "sure John, you have an anaconda in your pants"........he got tired of us making fun of his claims so one day he unzipped and I swear, a radiator hose from a '58 Oldsmobile came flopping out.

Well, you boys know me, I like to give nicknames to people so for the next 35-40 years he was known as "Snake Man with one eye". Yea.....I wear 8 and 1/2's to maybe a nine with heavy socks. :D

Jay......for all around shooting in the 1873's (originals, no repo junk) nothing..I mean NOTHING beats 6 gr. of Bullseye in ether the 38-40 or 44-40....it's match velocity...high 1000, maybe 1080. The next best load for killing things is 7.5 grains of Unique or 8 grains of Herco for right around what these cartridges were intended for..1200 fps.

Do I have to explain "match velocity"? Well, I'm going to....match velocity is the velocity that's just below the speed of sound as ANY projectile going more that 1150-1200 will wobble when the speed goes below the transonic speed of around 1150 and below. THATS why .22 match ammo is much more accurate at long range (100 and more) than Hi speed ammo.

I couldn't believe it either as CCI Mini Mags will shoot like a house on fire right along with match ammo.......until......we get to the 150 meter turkeys and 200 meter rams.......especially the Rams.......3 or 4 shots out of five will zip right in there and 1 or 2 will be a foot off.......even with NO WIND.

My most accurate 44-40 load for hitting the 200 meter steel plates is 6 grains of Bullseye. Your "follow through" is MUCH more important with low velocity ammo.

OK...next story for entertainment purposes....my bud Mike calls me last month, "Jack, I NEED a short barreled 44 magnum for protection against bears at my cabin". I tried to talk him out of it as he's a good rifleman but a novice with handguns....blah...blah....you know, muzzle blast, hard recoil, harder to sight with a tiny barrel...........I suggested a 6" or even a four inch.......then suggested a 4" 357 with fast heavy hard cast......NOPE!.....He wanted a short 44 mag.......

So......he gets a 3" 629 and comes over the house with it yesterday afternoon........we cruise on down to Targetmaster, he buys a box of full power Remington's and a box of Hornady 225 flex tips..........(in my pocket I had about 20 rounds of different cast..from 800-1200 fps)......

Anyway he starts blasting with the full power loads and was barely able to keep his shots in 8" at 7 yards. I showed him how it was done but I shoot a lot......then I stick some hard cast in there at about 1000 and he says, "This is so much nicer". I says, "that'll kill anything up close".

So now I have ammo to load for him. :D ---6

Have to start calling this the "Bigfoot Thread". :D

Thanks, Six.
I've never used Bullseye. I shoot a lot of 8gr Unique loads with excellent results in 38-40. I've used it in 44 also, but this 73 wouldn't shoot it. I only have one 44-40 mold and the diameter is too small. I'm going to try it again, but with your bullets.
This will be a field load. I've never shot a deer with a 73. If all else fails, I have a 73 SRC in 38-40. :D

After watching the State of the Union speech most of the dems in that chamber should be ashamed of themselves. Bunch of spoiled brats behaving badly. I realize they disagree with most of what POTUS said but they were just rude. I was however entertained by the look on Pelosi’s face when President Trump was discussing the legislation for victims of violence to sue “sanctuary cities and states.”

I thought last years SOTU was good...this one was GREAT! Loved it....me and mom laughing something terrible by Trumps innuendo making azzes of dem policies....like California's sanctuary of criminals....socialism....illegals.....etc.....

Gunny...I don't use socks...I use potatoes in the back and zucchinis in the front...got to keep em guessing.....are the potatoes a continuation of the zucchini???? One time I only used the potatoes in the back and all the girls were running away from me and when one of the potatoes fell out, one of the girls screamed, "look! He laid an egg! I told her to be careful and don't step on it or you'll disturb the nest.---6

The "other Gunny" called and we are solidifying plans for the Nationals......he got us a room at the "no tell motel" in Ridgway.

Well...got to check on the nest and see if Nancy Pelosi is ready to hatch.--6

We had a white guy at Ft. Campbell who was about 5 ft 8 inches tall, but he had all the black guys crying in envy and embarrassment. Weisner could have been a porn star. He wore only about size 9 boots, and should have worn size 22 based on being able to bump himself in the knee. His wife was hot.

Piller,
We all have stories like yours......let me tell you about mine......different from above.......a work buddy of mine, a much older black guy that was raised in "lower-slower" Delaware on a sharecropper farm told me about his uncle...this is going back to the late forties, early fifties..........anyway, his uncle used to scare the kids around the farm by pulling it out and pointing it to and out the side slot in his farmer bib overalls wiggling it......telling the kids it was a snake that was going to get them. :D He told me laughing that when he died he needed two caskets. :D --6

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm glad he was acquitted.
The problem is, by everyone being all happy cause it went the way they want, it in some way gives legitimacy to the whole scam proceeding it was.
They are just going to come up with bigger lies next time. It will be a bigger conspiracy, because they fear no repercussions.
The fact is, constitutional laws were broken in full view of everyone by people who took an oathe to uphold the constitution. What is going to be done? Nothing.
So what message is sent? The President being acquitted doesn't infer their wrongdoing. It just says "better luck next time".

I don't mean to rant, or puke on everyone's picnic, but this is why I usually avoid political discussions.

I've always believed truth and righteousness prevails in the end......no matter how bad it looks, goodness wins. The house minority leader Kevin McCarthy said on Fox that if we win the house back, people are going to be investigated and sent to the big house........Karma.......

While I don't talk much here about it, politics is a big part of my life...Fox News is on our TV 95% of the time that it's on, mostly because they have the Foxiest babes as anchors....whew! The big screen makes it look like these babes are sitting next to me. I pretend to ask them out on dates and tell them Old Savage just wants to use them as sex symbols and arm candy while I will take them to fancy places like the gun club, Targetmaster, the gas station, and wine and dine them at pizza joints.

Yes, goodness wins...that's why the Gun Room is the winningest thread on the board, despite what a few say.....

Hey GRIFF!!......I woke up to this: (bottom picture)

You guys get snow?.......have you ever driven in the snow before? :D Our totals so far this year is .3. Yes.."point three" of an inch......nuttin'...........ooooooo, I'm excited.....Old Savages new pan gave me a .......... ........Fred....in a minute I'll show mom as I'm dropping off Nancy at the moment.......as cooking is not my bag, what is the importance of such a pan so I have something to tell her......

I'm curious...for real....how does one get excited about a frying pan..or for that matter, food? If it wasn't for mom's Mediterranean cooking, I'd be 140 pounds as I really don't care to eat. But at 185 I'm a very healthy individual. Doc told me I'm the "youngest in body" senior citizen he has.......he also said he's never seen a person who has been smashed up multiple times with multiple broken bones and can still walk around solid.......it's my mind that needs work. Oh well...

On Tuesday, yes, the Tuesday that was two days ago I climbed up a maple tree to dislodge a huge broken branch that was stuck way up there....I managed to get 90% of it outta there.....the picture don't look like much...I took it after the tornado but look towards the top where a 8" branch is wedged in there......pulled a cordless chainsaw up with a rope and watched it fall.

Image

Yea....went to bed at 1:30....got up around 10......made a post and went back to bed......Miss Apple and Miss Spiderhead kept me warm and I fell back asleep......sure is hard being retired.....now I have a 44-40 Marlin to check the sights on for the BIG MATCH THIS WEEKEND.

Well Six, I love to eat and I like to cook. It is kind of like reloading. I can get things the way I want them. At last count we have either 17 or 19 frying pans. A dozen I have acquired in the last two years. I have one more in mind. Pat thinks I have too many of anything I am interested in. ;-) Well over 100 golf clubs. Unlike guns they do not appreciate.

Btw, there is a very well used 1941 manufacture Model 70 in 30-06 with period scope at the local gun shop for $550.

Unless the bore is a .30 cal shotgun you might want to rethink it sitting at the local gunshop!

One of these days I have to take a picture of my frying pan... it's small, only about 20-24" and from what I know it was on a navy ship from WW1, probably whichever ship my great uncle served on.

Mom likes the pan..she had to explain to me what the hell a crepe is...I though a crepe was a "creepy" weirdo type. Yea...I ain't much cultured. That's why I hang around you guys....maybe sometime I'll start wearing clothes better than jeans and maybe indoor plumbing. Make a few calls and get those junk cars off the cinder blocks that we have out in the dooryard.

The pre war '06......mmmmmm. THATS where the money is....even though it's beat it could be worth a pile.....look at the number.....15-20 years ago a rancher in Colorado was driving around for decades with a pre War model 70 on his pick up truck rifle rack......somewhere down the line a guy like me looked at it.....serial number 1. ...the owner never knew the significance of it all.

Look at the period scope....I made my buddy $3,000 by looking at this Unertle scope that came in on a beater model 70.....I pointed out four little letters on the scope that turned a $600 scope into a $3,000 scope.....U.S.M.C. Sniper.....

Fred...just look at it and shut up...sound stupid.....look at the number....early guns of famous designs bring big money for usual serial numbers....might be something like "333", '777, 1000. You don't know....you,know that Colt Lightning I have that's serial number 58? The owner walked that gun around a REAL gun show where only antiques are allowed....
Dealers are all old white guys with coats and ties on....a real high class gunshow that never has anything but old guns.......after this guy walked the gun around for a couple of hours no one was interested and he walked outside where I was sitting on a bench......I said to him, "what ya got there young man?" He tells me an old Colt with a factory letter. I look at it and the serial number and say, "how much?"....he says "18" ....I reach in my pocket and peel him out 18 Ben's.......then ask him if he has anything else......he says, "yea, an old Marlin out in my car. We walk out, he pops the trunk and I saw the gun...AND REMEMBERED IT from my youth, I said, "you Billy Mocks son?" He says, "yep" blah..blah....how much?......7.....I pay him another 7 plus 50 more and tell him to take his wife out to dinner on me......the Marlin was an ultra rare 1881 wth a 30" extra heavy buffalo barrel on it."

Pay attention to what you see for sale.....most people don't think to look at numbers.

No brag, but everyone has a special gift and Ive said this before, these guns find me...I don't look for em...

Hey thanks buddy. I sure can use 4 million bucks. Spent yesterday cleaning up snow. Oldest kid is sick so I went and did his too. Pretty well used up my 2hrs sleep so I crashed last night.
Once I get that money I can hire it done.
And! I can FINALLY afford the guns I deserve. It will seem weird buying them instead of stuffing them in my buffalo coat.
I should do some loading today too. Starting to think about what I'm going to hunt with this year.
The old man was talking about it the other day too. Makes me smile to think he will be 79 this year and is thinking of what rifle to use 10 months before the season. :D

I think they try and spread that stuff on purpose.

Jay funny you mention that your Dad is contemplating what gun to use. The buddy I went to the Great American Outdoors show with, asked me yesterday what was I gonna use for my doe gun this year? The answer is......1886 takedown in 33wcf circa 1911. I know I know kinda modern for me but what the Schumer? The design is well over 100 years old even if this gun is Just slightly over 100. I’ll try to do better next year.
Gunny, the show had spots that were crowded but not to too bad on a rainy snowy Thursday. Honestly the biggest crowd was around the DONALD TRUMP souvenir stand. I talked with Wayne LaPierre.for about 10 minutes. He has not always been eye to eye with my views but seemed interested in my opinions and concerns. LOTS of soft stuff. At the Anderson booth they had primary arms micro Red dots with Anderson Arms on it close out $75. Yes, please. I got an ER Shaw. Heavy threaded barrel for one off my 10/22’s show special $75. And some under $20 knickknacks. On the way home I dropped off a 16 inch Rossi 92 barrel to be threaded. Then a buddy of mine called that he had a 1947 Marlin 39 for sale. He says it in “good shape”. With a Lyman tang sight on it, all for $300. The best part is he still owes me $200 from before so I pretty much got do that l!
I did see quite a few 80 percent lowers for sale at the show. There was an article in one of the newspaper that the “reporter” followed a convicted felon to a gun show where the felon bought an 80 percent lower the bought all the parts “and walked out with a fully functioning rifle.” PELOSI! Not unless he had a Bridgeport in his pocket. A few months ago the Pennsylvania Azzhat General, err I mean Attorney General in cahoots with Governor dipstuff decided that an 80 percent lower was a firearm and needed to be registered as a firearm. So sales dropped significantly and no more mail order. Well on Friday a Pa Judge with more common sense than agendas Put an injunction on THAT. 80 percent lowers ain’t my thing because I have a couple registered suppressors and they ain’t for my four wheeler so ATF knows I have guns BUUUT to say that a chunk of aluminum that needs a significantl amount of machining for other parts to even fit innit is a firearm is DUMB. They even had to make a new form for it because ATF told them they couldn’t use an4473 because it wasn’t a firearm. Don’t ya hate it when really gets in the way of your stupid political agenda. All in all a good day. Then Mrs fordwannabe made me a birthday peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream on it💕

Happy Birthday Tom......peach cobbler and all...(you get ALL the neat stuff). Did you have Tube steak with that?...you know, all smothered in underwear?

I'm with Sergeant-In-Command Gunny.......I stay the hell away from crowds.....like he said, in addition to hating crowds, why subject yourself to multiple diseases ......yea....I'm also a member of the "hate driving" club....

Guess what got me up??? First, I take my hearing aids out when I'm sleeping.......anyway, a voice comes from what sounded like the front door and it sounded like a buddy of mine who brings me wood......so I answered, "OK Craig, I'm getting dressed...be right out."..........I fly out of bed, put on slippers and go outside to major wind and rain......no one there! WTF???? ......................... ...............Wife says, "you stupid retart, the sound was a tornado warning from my phone.".........

Oh well.......sure is fun getting old, hard of hearing, stupid, and all those things that come with "not giving a F."

Mmmmmmmmm....what kind of fun am I gonna get into today?---6

Well, I ain't doing much so far. Been dubbing around online researching my WW2 German helmet a little. There are a crazy amount of variants.
From what I can see, it is an M40 "Double Decal" combat Poletzi variant. Supposedly kinda scary dudes. Some of "Heinrich's Kids".

Sounds like a fun day Tom. You better jump on that Marlin!

You dont need to worry about another tornado since all your trees are gone!

So is the helmet for ice fishing, deer hunting or just to wear for your 50 mile commute ?

How did Jay get that helmet in his coat? I know little about them but my bud does....he says you really have to be careful as lots of this stuff and the decals were reproduced back in the sixties and now look old. There are codes stamped in the different parts and if you know what your looking for it easy to tell a fake from real.....

Big bucks there Jay........you could sell that and buy a whole rack full of buffalo coats....maybe even a buffalo rug...hell, you can buy enough buffalo hides to cover up your Jeep and then you could really go-to-town, stashing complete safes in there.

For real...what's the story on your helmet? Interesting. Can Gunny have it?

The BIG MATCH tomorrow.....don't know if I'm going..depends on the wind....it's going to be cold and nothing is worse than shooting in the cold and trying to shoot offhand in the wind. -----6.......o.....da Super Fly.....

Got another phone call on that issue I was telling you guys about....the wheels of justice turn slow....

It's not a fake. Relatives picked all this stuff up "on the job". Here are a few more items. There is a Hitler Youth dagger over my dad's, also.
I've heard that an M40 helmet that is a dual decal is fairly rare on its own.
In this pic is a stopwatch with the eagle and swastika emblem, a Luftwaffe dress dagger, a medic's field tool, and two lengths k98 bayonets.
