Stone age tomahawk
I knapped this one out of a piece of rainbow flint. The handle is hickory from a broken sledge hammer i saved. I still need to bind it with rawhide but it came out nice.

That's cool I'm rubbish when it comes to knapping flint, something I should practice, you never know when it may come in handy.
If more men loved and cherished their wives as much as I love bacon the world would be a much better place.
Re: Stone age tomahawk
I have messed with chipping stones to try and make something. I must be using the wrong stone or doing something wrong. I just get broken pieces even with using brass rods and gentle tapping with a tack hammer. Your tomahawk looks good.

Nice work, Farrier. I play at knapping, but here in southern New Mexico we only have some tough cherts that need heat-treating -- nothing like all that obsidian I had back in Oregon.

If I made anything from stone it would just look like a rock tied to the end of a stick. That's some gorgeous work shaping that tomahawk!

beautiful work that. I think that the ax "evolved" from the adze, because the first of those were not hafted and were used in flensing and scraping hides, for which the adze/ulu is better suited..... also, if you ever want to make a dugout, the adze form of blade is well suited to the job....
it would be great to see you haft one and use it. I made one with a steel blade and it is one of my most useful tools, I use it to dub off plywood on a boat bottom to dubbing off a 2x4 to ease a wiring chase.
my wife gave me a bone hafted flint knife, but I'm not using it in my day to day work. I just like to hold it and, don't tell anyone, talk to it from time to time ....

Looks nice. I would think that some items similar to that were used in the past. No, I am not an expert on such matters. It looks as if it could be dangerous to the recipient.

Beautiful!
I could probably crumble flint if I tried that.

Re: Stone age tomahawk
If you really want to crumble flint, a brisant explosion works. Tannerite is OK, but it is not as fast as black powder. C4 has the speed to be VERY brisant. CV38 doesn't break things up very well. Too slow. I got to play with explosives for a couple of days on a familiarization course one time. I can crush ur shatter flint with a hammer, but to really mess it up nothing beats an explosion. Of course it does just the opposite of what you want to accomplish if you are trying to make something.
