What is the right age to learn to hunt....

Post by AJMD429 »

We all discuss the minimum age end of the spectrum, and take pride in our young'uns getting their first deer but what about someone old enough to be a great-great-great grandma....?

I think that was awesome.....! 8)

i say any age for small game or supressors, 18 for high powered centrefires. I grew up firing full sized guns from a young age, then the army took a chunk out of hearing and gave me tinnitus. Part of that was learning even with hearing protection, too much sound still gets through, especially for handguns and short barrels. I dont mind the idea of an adult choosing to delete a little hearing in a pursuit. Kids I figure deserve to hear full clarity until they can make a decision themselves what they want to do with their hearing. rimfires only until 18.

Back when,...."Here" you had to be 14 to get a small game hunting license, but had to hunt with an adult. So I spent my early days throwing rocks.....

So if someone WANTS to hunt, they'll find a way

I don't think anyone can say a particular age is the "perfect age" to start hunting. It is all about the individual kid, and up to the parent to decide when they are ready. I know my brother had his son out hunting with us when he was 10 years old because my nephew was nuts about hunting. But he was so excited about hunting that my brother put him into hunter's ed. at 12 when he could legally hunt here.
After completing hunters ed. he was itching to hunt that fall, but my brother thought he was too excited, and didn't buy him a license that fall. He again went along to watch, and was very upset he couldn't hunt. The next year he got his license, and was the first in our party to bag his buck. He's turned out to be one of the best hunters I know, and at 40 now he still says he wishes he'd gotten to start at 12 yrs. old. I think my brother was right to hold him back, and how safe he is in the field tells me it was a good decision.
