My first finger joint box. pictures added.
Made a finger joint box today for the first time, used a regular table saw blade but have a Dado blade on order.
It`s kind of a pain in the butt with all the flip here and turn there but we got er done.
Plan on making a couple pistol boxes.

Re: My first finger joint box.
The trick to finger joints is a LOT of scrap to practice setting up the jig. I have done them with a homemade jig for the table saw but now I have a store bought jig and use the router table. It's still a lot to get everything just right!!
Dovetails by hand -NO WAY!! I use a router and a jig. They can be a real pain to get right also.

Yepper, i think i have it figured now and will make another tomorrow about three inch high .
The Dado i ordered is a wobble type because it was cheap and will try that when it gets here.

Stack dado work, great for having on a jobsite not to mention they are very adjustable. I have a stack dado in the shop.

Finger joint or dovetail joint boxes are some of the prettiest boxes made! I just don't have the talent for woodworking myself, but I sure like what you've done there Pitchy. Give me some steel, a welder, and a grinder and I can stick things together, but not wood.

Outstanding Lenn. I really like boxes like that. I've long wanted to make one for my 62 police model. Very elegant little pistol but needs all that "stuff" to load it so a box with everything in it would be nice. Maybe I'll finally get around to it after the shop remodel.

you can get them flush by making them a little long and sanding flat. also, it looks good to round the corners sometimes.Pitchy wrote: ↑Sun Nov 10, 2019 3:23 pm Thanks Gunny, i didn`t do it quite right and the edges didn`t come out flush so will try again tomorrow.

Thanks fellers Grizz what i was talking about is the bottom and top if ya mess up the fingers don`t come out just right and ya can end up with a thin finger over the top or bottom.
The last one worked out right, Dado blade should be here today so will try that out.

Re: My first finger joint box.
Not finger joint made it a week ago, it`s a really good design for a napkin holder.
Used to have a metal one and the napkins stood on edge that didn`t work very well, the roller keeps them down so one rolls out perfect.

I like the napkin holder..........especially the burnt finish........it's a bit too classy for our use though........around here we'd just reach in and grab a handful and set em next to the holder. Yea....rednecks in Pennsylvania too. Up where Jay lives they never even heard of napkins...they still use the Sears catalog.----6

Re: My first finger joint box. pictures added.
Since my woodworking skills and tools are low, I usually try to find boxes that are old and made by somebody with skills. I did once build a box for my 1893 Marlin 3 barrel takedown set, and surprisingly it came out pretty good. At least good enough that people thought it was made by Marlin in the old days.
I'm love fitted cases for old guns so when I find old cases I like to build out the interiors to fit various guns I own. It doesn't take the kind of skill you possess in doing these nice jointed cases, as whatever dividers I build get covered with felt so the workmanship is hidden under that.
Did this one for my #4 Remington Rolling Block.
And this one for a Ballard.
I'd build a bunch if I had your woodworking skills!

Marlinman...it don't get much more classier than your single shots.....couldn't imagine having to part with them. I hope I die before .....if for some strange reason I become broke.......of having to part with a few of my S.A.Colts & Winchesters.---6

Very nice Marlinman.
We`re putting together a box for the 94 win as we speak, going to put that foam in it from one of those factor plastic rifle boxes.
Will post later.

Either polyurethane or lacquer. I like poly on open grain wood, lacquer on maple works well.

Love that rifle case Pitchy! Only thing I'd change is making it shallow so the gun doesn't have room to shift, and of course making dividers to surround the gun and keep it from moving.
But your workmanship is excellent, and the case looks like it is made in the old style when guys did high quality gun cases from wood! Nice!
