I'd never heard that story either, or knew that Jimmy ever owned a P51 -- thanks for sharing!

Sally was quite a gal!

FYI, the "QP" is code for the 334th Fighter Squadron, of the famed 4th Fighter Group from Debden, England; the highest scoring fighter group in the ETO in WWII (my late father served on that base with the 335th). The 4th put the first Mustangs over Berlin, when Reichmarschall Hermann Goering looked up and remarked “When I saw Mustangs over Berlin, I knew the jig was up...” (i.e. the war was lost).

The planes and the cars were both great....

Cool story. Jimmy Stewart was a man who crossed many horizons in life; there are many actors, and many fighter pilots, but not many who have done well at both.

I always liked Jimmy Stewart in movies and respected his military service but I have never heard that story before, thanks for the heads up.

At the age of sixteen, the actor allowed Sally to fly solo.
Sounds fishy to me. I looked around briefly and did not find confirmation Stewart owned a P-51, though I saw some stuff on him sponsoring a racing P-51.

Cool Story!

Saw my first Mustang this past weekend. It did some fly overs.

Joe DeBona and Jimmy Stewart jointly owned Mustang N5528N, "Thunderbird", that had been built from parts salvaged from several aircraft. The plane was sold to Jackie Cochran in 1949. She set several records with it and sold it back to Stewart in 1953. It was then sold to DeBona in '54 and he in turn sold it to James Cook. The aircraft was subsequently destroyed in a crash in '55.

He probably flew it. If I were a pilot and owned a plane like that, I would have to fly it at least once. Jimmy Stewart was a pilot, and a good one from all accounts.

He was an instructor early in his career and went on to pilot 20 missions in B24s after volunteering for combat. Post war he flew the B36, B47 and B52 and even went on one B52 mission in Nam as an observer. Private to Colonel in four years and retired as a brigadier general, quite a record for someone who often appeared on the screen as a soft-spoken easy going individual. Though he was far too old for the part I don't think anyone could have done a better job of portraying Charles Lindbergh.
