Saving old wood
Some time ago my son bought me an authentic blackthorn walking stick/ cane. It is absolutely beautiful but with all things the wood is showing some age, in fact it has a split in it from drying out. I've been coating it lately with a product used on furniture called OLD ENGLISH LEMON OIL but I'm wondering if there might be something better. I've read that Balistol is good for cleaning guns as well as preserving leather and wood but having tried that yet.
I read once in the FOXFIRE books IIRC that old gunsmiths used to soak ramrods in coal oil and it would cause the ramrod to become so flexible that they could be bent double without breaking.
Anybody have any suggestions? I don't really want to seal it but would rather re moisturize it.

50/50 blend of boiled linseed oil and turpentine! The turpentine is to aid the oil to penetrate. It does take a little longer to dry out! Multiple coats are allowed

See there ! Good things come to those who wait.....
I was going to post "grease it well and take care to keep it out of the coals of the hearth or campfire, " but someone who actually knows something has given a good answer.

Re: Saving old wood
I have found that tadalafil works pretty well to restore old wood, and it lasts longer than competitive products.

Re: Saving old wood
You could perhaps ask Jocelyn Elders about moisturizing wood. I seem to remember that she became famous for trying to teach High School kids about it.
On a serious note, you could try steaming the item then using a paste wax and some heat. The heat is to get the wax absorbed into the fibers. After the steam has has swelled the wood back to where you want it, use liquid furniture polish on it regularly to keep it from drying out again.

Seriously though, ther are people preserving old and fragile wood that is 'spalted' - which is usually fungus-infested (which gives it the interesting colors) but therefore delicate. They have tecniques to strenthen and preserve it, I think often using proxies and acrylics. Researching that topic might yield useful information.
