22 hunt day.
Miserable wet morning here so I went town early to give a blood sample then went home waiting for the weather to improve.
By 1:00 pm I had had enough. That 22 itch just got to much.
Eventually the rain eased and I settled into a good walk and small game hunt.
Squirrel hunting this time of year is the best. Some real fatties about too. The icing on the cake today was a rooster I spied from afar. I set off on a stalk to get around on him. He seemed to be heading to some timber I could get in...ahead of him.
I got in the timber and worked towards the sheep pasture he was in.
From just in the tree line and resting on the side of a tree I guessed some hold and sent one as he plucked at the clover. Miss, but now I had his attention and with head and neck erect sent #2. Perfect neck shot.
84 paces or there abouts. There was some missing done during the day. A crow at 50 yds! Another at about 250 yds. Can't win them all.

Re: 22 hunt day.
You are right about fat squirrels, they are feeding well this Fall.
I've been using my Magtech .22 more recently, due to the fact the local gamekeeper can't hear it with the old Parker Hale silencer on it. He complains to my landlord that I'm disturbing the pheasants with my shotgun
I may have to try one of those fancy carrying handles, my old eyes don't like iron sights so much these days.

An excellent day in the field ! While walking in the big timber up north several days ago, there is a huge mast crop this year. Should eqyste to well fed gray and fox squirrels as well as whitetails too.

Re: 22 hunt day.
My go to easy pheasant is....
Brown diced meat in olive oil and garlic.
When just browned kill the fry with a large glass of white wine and let simmer for ten minutes.
Add four table spoons of Dijon mustard and garden peas.
Simmer for 15.
Thicken the mixture and serve on what the hell you fancy.

Thanks guys. Nath I bet that recipe would work with duck. No squirrels at my place...no oaks trees, mostly mesquite trees. I can occasionally pop a duck off the tanks when water is in season

Good job Nath. I need to go out and kill a couple myself. I like my squirrel browned then pressured then add dumplings.

Squirrels taste like wet cardboard to me, so I usually make a tasty Brunswick stew from any I take.
