Remington 700 Ultimate ML

Post by 6pt-sika »

Took the new Remington 700 Ultimate Muzzleloader out a few times the last two weeks . The target was two shots at 100 yards after I was finished making adjustments. I’m using the 250 grain rubber tipped bullet Hornady uses in their sabots and loads in the 450 Bushmaster . I’m pushing it with H4198 . I have the inexpensive Athlon 4-12 on top .

If and when I replace my front stuffer one of these are on my list. Seeing the accuracy you have achieved , makes me think more about replacing it sooner!
I wasn't aware of the Rem being rated for smokeless. Sadly here we can't hunt with smokeless in muzzle loaders!

Remington doesn’t advocate smokeless either . Mostly Triple 7 pellets and Blackhorn 209 . I have both 777 and Blackhorn to try in it I just couldn’t bring myself to it . After having the Savage 10MLII I wasn’t going to be satisfied unless I used smokeless . On a side not seems Hornady doesn’t sell the black sabots by themselves anymore so I suppose I’ll change over to Harvester Crusher sabots . I also have some Hornady rubber tipped .452” 200 and 225 grainers I wanna try in this thing . They were originally purchased for the 450 BM but that thing went down the road awhile back .

I will add since I got this thing I’ve found out about a dozen folks I know around here also have them and it seems a 50/50 split those that use smokeless to those that use Blackhorn/777 .

You can't just delete the text that says 'attachment' - you have to go down to the 'Attachments' dialogue below the editing box, and select the attachment there, then press the 'delete' option. Hope that works after you've altered the text; if not, try typing the text back manually so the function can 'delete' it...???

BTW - Pretty good accuracy....!!!!!

First thing this AM I went to the range with the 700 ML three different weight Hornady rubber tipped bullets and the Chrony . Shot all bullets with 64.5 grains of H4198 . Shot the 250 grains n first and three averaged 2089 FPS , three of the 225’s averaged 2035 FPS and three of the 200’s averaged 1961 FPS . I thought it a little strange that as I went lighter velocity decreased but that’s what I got . The good thing was all three were same POI at 50 yards . I’ll try again at 100 yards with all three and I might boost the charge to 65.5 grains of H4198 .

Got an order in from Midway today . Hodgdon has quit selling their black sabots by themselves so I ordered four packages of these Harvestor sabots . Hopefully next week I’ll give them a try .

How did you determine the charge of 4198? Are you using the breech plug that came with the Remington? I have wondered how my Encore muzzle loader barrel would do with smokeless. Of course T/C says don't do it! I shoot the Hornaday 45 caliber 250gr plastic tip bullets with their red sabot.

A friend has one , he and another fellow that’s fooled with the Remington a lot worked up the load . I was told they liked 65.5 grains the best so I started with 62.5 grains to see how it went for the first six or eight shots then went to 64.5 grains . I like the Hornady 250 gr 45 cal rubber tipped inside the Hornady black sabot which is exactly what they sold in 20 or 25 round packs . But they’ve seen fit not to sell the black sabot in 50 round bags anymore so I’m
Going with the Harvester sabots after I run out of the black Hornady’s . As to the breech plug yes it’s factory . A few years back I had a Savage 10ML-II that I liked a lot with the same bullet/sabot and 42 grains of VV N-110 . Killed a bunch of deer with that one , but I’ve not seen anyone that suggests using N-110 in the Remington and of course you’re aware Remington does not advocate smokeless in these guns either .
