Chronographing Model 94 .30-30 Trapper
These are OK in my gun but may not be in yours.
Chronograph of .30-30 loads
Winchester Model 94 Trapper
16" barrel
12 feet from muzzle to first screen
_____________________________
135 gr. Hornady FTX bullet
31 gr. H322
(R-P rifle primers)
2218 fps average
32.5 gr. H322
(R-P rifle primers)
2235 fps average
_____________________________
125 gr. Speer .311" (AK bullet)
(R-P rifle primers)
32.5 gr. H322
2384 fps. average
_____________________________
Speer 130 gr. FP Hot-Cor bullet
32.5 gr. H322
(R-P rifle primers)
2414 fps average
_____________________________
38.5 gr. LeverEvolution
(R-P rifle primers)
2361 fps average
38.5 gr. LeverEvolution
(CCI#350 magnum pistol primers)
2443 fps average
_____________________________
39.5 gr. LeverEvolution
(R-P rifle primers)
2432 fps average
39.5 gr. LeverEvolution
(CCI#350 magnum pistol primers)
2448 fps average
The Magnum Pistol Primers gave very clean burning but there was no appreciable gain over the Remington #9 1/2 Rifle Primers. In some loads it appears the Magnum Pistol Primers will give much great gains. I have not experimented much with them. This is Off The Charts Territory. Explore at your risk.
I went up another 1/2 grain of LeverEvolution but got no gain in velocity or SD. While the LeverEvolution works fine, H322 seems more accurate and more consistent from my gun. A little over 2400 fps seems to be the top velocity with the Speer bullet in my short barreled 94.

Re: Chronographing Model 94 .30-30 Trapper
I believe I shot that gun at a hackberry tree exactly one time. The guy who let me shoot it did not look so much like lee marvin back then. The other shooters were really mad at that tree. In less time than it took me to type this they had sawn it down with concentrated gunfire.
Belay that tree species, I remembered the bark being smoother but looking at the before, during, and after destruction photos, I think it was an elm.

Re: Chronographing Model 94 .30-30 Trapper
JimT,
For me, the Federal large rifle Match Magnum primers made a significant difference in my .405 WCF when shooting compressed charges. The 400 grain load I took buff hunting was 35 fps faster with the only change being to switch from xxx mag primer to Fed215M. It burned very clean too.

Jim...kind of off the subject but I noticed you used the 125 Speer bullet for the AK..311. Funny thing, a couple of years ago a buddy gave me 1000 of those but they were mil-sup......didn't want no money....he said, "these are useless, full metal jacket, .311 diameter.....hell, they do great in the 300 B.O. and the .308. They actually mike .310.....1/2 grain less powder and those babies are good to go in any 30 caliber.---6

Primers are a wonderful thing ... little changes can make big differences.crs wrote: ↑Wed Aug 14, 2019 10:12 pm JimT,

Re: Chronographing Model 94 .30-30 Trapper
I have shot a lot of them out of the Trapper. I can't get them to go any faster than the 130's from the short barrel and they hit about the same place at 130 yards .. the longest distance I have shot them. I seat them out a bit ... they won't feed through the action .. and use the same powder charge as I use with the 130 Speer bullet.Sixgun wrote: ↑Wed Aug 14, 2019 10:36 pm Jim...kind of off the subject but I noticed you used the 125 Speer bullet for the AK..311. Jim, thanks for posting these data. I am surprised the CCI 350 made such a velocity difference, but this is where having a chronograph shines.
