Genius in bamboo woodworking

Post by Bill in Oregon »

This gentleman is an absolute master of a few very sharp tools -- and of his raw material. I couldn't stop watching to see what he would make next.

Did you notice he still seems to have all his fingers and toes? I'd be counting only to 7 in very short order ...

Six would have to change his handle to five.

His nickname is NOT Lefty.

Bamboo is very straight grain, splits easily but I believe it has a higher silica content and that wears cutting edges fast.
This guys talents are great but it's because he had to learn just for daily survival living in whoflungpoo China .

That caught my eye, too, Grizz. A lot of heft behind a razor edge = very useful tool.

I'm starting to see more and more bamboo furniture around. Several years ago it was oak. It seems that bamboo is the new oak. I know I've seen some very, very fine bamboo fly rods. It makes me want to go plant some myself. One thing to be cautious of if you get the same urge. Know that there are two basic kinds of bamboo. Clumping and running. Clumping is good and manageable, on the other hand the running type will send roots underground to places you don't want it to go. There are even some cities that have passed ordinances that will make you keep your bamboo from running into your neighbor's property.

Rusty, there is a woman in Austin who is a bamboo farmer, or rancher, or herder. She has a small plot of land and cultivates several varieties of bamboo. I got some last time there but haven't had time or inclination to use it yet.

Did you notice that all the bodger's projects were with green fresh cut material? Suggests that a nearby forest is essential. It seems to me that old cuts of bamboo are tough and difficult to work compared to the green stock.
