Rock Island Auction

Post by 6pt-sika »

A Parker I purchased in the June Rock Island Auction arrived today . It’s a circa 1889 DH 10 gauge on a 3 frame with 30” barrels . Gun actually looks better then I was expecting after the fiasco at their last Auction with the 4 frame Parker ! This gun is a second year of hammerless production gun and has what’s considered the “early” DH engraving which is not quite as profuse as the later patterns .

Nice looking gun. I've always wanted a side-by-side in 28 or 410. I'm always hesitant because I'm not knowledgeable in that area.

I’d like to add 28 and 410 Parker’s to my accumulation. But a decent Parker V grade 28 is 10G’s and up and a 410 V will start at 20G’s .

Yeah, I like to swing by the Connecticut Shotgun Manufacturing site now and again to dream. I can stare at the engraved Fox copies in 28 and 410 for hours. But there's nothing on those pages under $20k.

At the Southern SxS in 2018 I checked out Galazans truck , they had a pile of original and their copies/renditions there . They had the Cliff Green two gun four barrel Parker set there for I think 1/4 mill or so . Ida liked that gun it was 12-20-28-410 .

Something worth noting “original” AH Fox guns were ONLY made in 12 , 16 and 20 gauges .

That's interesting. I would not have guessed that those guns are inauthentic in that way.

Did the smaller gauges like 28 and 410 come later, say post-1890 and were then generally unavailable in the 19th centrury? Or is it just that Fox didn't pursue that market segment?

To the best of my knowledge when AH Fox was owned by AH Fox they never made any 28’s or 410’s . Also after Savage bought them and moved them to Utica to the best of my knowledge NO 28’s or 410’s were built on the original style AH Fox actions . Savage did however make a 410 on what they called their Fox B action which is nothing more then the Stevens 311 . Nothing wrong with the 311 guns but they’re not the same thing as an AH Fox action . As to pre 1890 etc AH Fox was not founded until 1906 .

I have another DH 10 coming from a guy in AZ . Found it on GunInternational , supposedly he sent it yesterday so it’ll get here before I leave on the 22nd . This DH has the later engraving pattern which has much more scrollwork I guess you’d say .

Compare these side actions pics to the one in the gun above and you can see what I’m saying .

Got the tracking number earlier today on the later DH 10 it’s coming from Phoenix and scheduled to be delivered here 7/18/19 next Thursday ! Which is great as I’m leaving for the Philippines Monday 7/22/19 and be gone until 8/22/19 . So atleast I can look it over before I leave in case there are any issues as I have a three day return policy .

6pt I saw a Parker in 28 yesterday at a gun show in Dripping Springs. I noticed the nice wood and 6500 price tag and kept moving. There was an old dude there with a nice ax collection. He was asleep :D

Sounds like that might have been one of the Parker Repro 28’s ! Was it in a case etc ? Good price for a 28 Repro is $4500-6000 depending on whether DT , ST , SG , PG . The Repros were only made in DHE , BHE and A-1 Special . And the wood would be a decent indication it was a Repro . They’re actually nice guns just the “made in Japan” kinda kills it for me . Almost bought one when they hit the market in the late 80’s , friend that ran the Pro Shop at the Fairfax Rod & Gun was at our club for a Skeet shoot and had brought some for sale items . One was a Parker DHE Repro 28 gauge 26” DT & PG for $2400 NIB , he also brought a NIB Winchester Model 23 Classic 28 gauge 26” ST PG for $1200 . Me being financially challenged even more so then now I opted for the Model 23 . Little gun shot well but I never really took it to heart so to speak . There’s a guy in the PGCA with a nice original VHE 26” in really beautiful shape that he’s asking $14,500 only hiccup is he had the chokes opened from F&F to IC/LM . I’ve struggled with making the plunge on this one on one hand I’d like to have it and on the other hand the chokes being messed with turns me off :(

There was no case and it looked to be an old gun, I only glanced at it, and would not have done that if not reading your comments on these s/s. IT was the first gun you saw when you came through the door.
